A group of armed robbers fleeing the police head for the New Jersey Tunnel and run right into trucks transporting toxic waste. The spectacular explosion that follows results in both ends of the tunnel collapsing and the handful of people who survived the explosion are now in peril. Kit Latura is the only man with the skill and knowledge to lead the band of survivors out of the tunnel before the structure collapses.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

The opening's got a great fiery explosion and Stallone puts in another earnest, sympathetic performance, but all else in Daylight feels designed to annoy the audience into submission.

A lower-echelon disaster thriller, in which the best character is knocked off early on and the leading man runs out of ideas with a third of the picture still to go. Go to Full Review

Cohen keeps the vehicle cruising in fourth gear, hoping the audience won't get too impatient with the familiar scenery. Big, efficient, mindless entertainment. Go to Full Review

As with most disaster films, there are some spectacular explosions and scary acts of destruction, but the human activity is not so well executed. Go to Full Review

supplies plenty of bombast when the disaster strikes (the initial explosion in the tunnel is particularly spectacular), although things feel sluggish when characters talk too much Go to Full Review

The survivors are a shrill, ungrateful lot, so Latura might as well have stayed home and watched Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot for the umpteenth time. Go to Full Review

Theodore M Jan 2, 2019 Terribly unrealistic. The only part I enjoyed because it was the most realistic was when the municaple director wanted to push ahead the repairs on the tunel so that they could get the city back in working order. See more
Albus M Jul 12, 2018 Yes it's an average quality movie but it is still good. The 90's had a whole bunch of great mediocre movies and this is one of them. A MUST SEE See more
Theodore R Aug 29, 2017 Solid disaster/action flick. Runs the paces, but does it well, with an interesting set of characters, and a leading man that doesn't have all the answers for once. The effects even hold up pretty well. See more
Ron S Jun 10, 2017 Joining the spate of 1990s natural disaster films ("Twister," "Dante's Peak," "Armageddon," "The Perfect Storm," etc.) Sylvester Stallone has to rescue a group of people trapped in a NYC tunnel collapse. Yep, that's pretty much it. Sly fends off raging water, explosion, giant fans, and all manner of destruction while working to save a collection of New York character cliches. The film was directed by Rob Cohen, who gave us "XXX" and the original of the Fast and the Furious films, so he certainly knows his way around an action sequence, but the story and characters are so weak that the film is merely one set pieces followed by another. That's not necessarily a bad thing (it's essentially the formula for the Tom Cruise Mission Impossible films), but this film felt too formula and routine to really stand out. Supporting actors in the film included Amy Brenneman, Viggo Mortensen, Barry Newman, Dan Hedaya, Claire Bloom, Danielle Harris, and Stan Shaw. Meh. See more
Poe S Jan 31, 2017 It's good movie to watch
Abraham R Jul 20, 2007 The premise is ripe with disaster/action cheese but it only partially delivers. Stallone truly feels like a babysitter of whiny, inconsequential and very inconsistent characters. The practical effects driven action delivers but it's really all this movie has. See more
