Critics Consensus

Darkest Hour is held together by Gary Oldman's electrifying performance, which brings Winston Churchill to life even when the movie's narrative falters.

Darkest Hour demonstrates the immense courage Churchill had. It doesn't fully absolve and deify him, rather humanizes. Go to Full Review

I don't want to undermine my admiration for Gary Oldman's performance, but I think the film itself is flawed. Go to Full Review

In Darkest Hour, Wright's charged, blustery framework pulls the audience into a distant political landscape. But his approach here is also limiting and nearly wearying. Go to Full Review

The film builds its mounting prospects of calamity and clashes of dissension with polish and gumption, avoiding many of the dull notes normally saddling most other behind-the-war-room yak-fests. Go to Full Review

Stirring though the proceedings may sometimes be, Darkest Hour resists absolute immersion so that its audience will notice how much effort went into its making. Go to Full Review

Abraham G Apr 17, 2019 Excellently staged with good period detail and a great cast (and Gary Oldman giving a stellar performance), the movie isn't so exacting concerning historical accuracy - and Winston Churchill remains an enigmatic figure. See more
Abraham R Apr 15, 2019 Yawn. Darkest Hour? More like........... BORING Hour!
Kylo S Apr 11, 2019 Gary Oldman is incredible and really brought out the humanity in a man who was larger than life. I've wanted to see this movie for a while and it didn't disappoint. See more
George S Apr 5, 2019 The Darkest Hour occurs over 4 weeks in May 1940 as Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain steps down and Winston Chruchill takes over despite protests from the opposition and his own cabinet. During this time Chamberlain and Lord Halifax still had a lot of power and sway over the mood and decision making in parliament. They both hoped to broker a peace deal with Hitler as the Nazi army edged ever closer to the British Isles, trapping thousands of British soldiers at Dunkirk. It was only through Winston Churchill's courage and tenacity that the mood changed and he eventually gained the support he needed to continue the fight against Nazi Germany. This is short snippet of the life of Winston Churchill and so it doesn't tell the whole story of the man, especially the many controversies surrounding his career. However, as a snippet of time when our nation feared invasion and only one man was willing to lead the fight rather than give in, it was spot on. Gary Oldman was superb underneath all the make up and the suit, it really was a one man show. See more
Draco R Mar 18, 2019 Gary Oldman's Performance was pretty good, but I felt this world was so small by just focusing on Churchill and his actions. Focusing only on Churchill made for no action making the movie a yawn. See more
Han R Mar 5, 2019 a spectacular representation of Churchill's finest moments in the darkest of times. Gary Oldman gives one of the best performances of the year, and Churchill's fabulous speeches and demeanour give him the ability to fully explore the character, which he does to perfection. See more
