Critics Consensus

Bette Davis does it her way with a tour de force performance in Dark Victory, a moving melodrama that snatches triumph from the jaws of mortality.

Judith frequently grasps onto objects, her clothes or a chair... Davis has so much energy and life force flowing through her that she has to direct it somewhere. Go to Full Review

Guilty pleasure: One of Warner's best acted melodramas and Bette Davis's all-time favorite, in which she lives hard but dies in dignity as an heiress gone blind. Also Davis revenge as Tallulah Bankhead failed to bring the role to life in the 1934 play. Go to Full Review

At the end of the day, it is rather difficult to make a defense for the film itself. It’s a poor rip-off of a Garbo vehicle and Garbo’s films were nothing to write home about in the first place. Go to Full Review

The themes tend to be more powerful than the individual events, as tinier episodes populate a tale in need of more significant happenings. Go to Full Review

Han L Feb 21, 2019 We would have more sympathy with the leading character if she had been a nice, caring, average woman before her diagnosis instead of the bitchy, headstrong, party-girl who gets drunk with Ronald Reagan every night because they're both rich. No scientific diagnosis is ever made, and this "doctor" breaks every doctor-client privilege because of his immediate dumb struck gee-haw love for the misbehaving heiress. Something is wrong? Into the brain we go. Prognosis? Nine months of perfect normality, then death within hours. Quite a medical feat if anyone, even today can do this. But let's not muddy the plot up with doctors, medicine, or science when Davis and the others need to emote. How is this a classic, nor how did anyone feel any emotion toward a badly written script that didn't even check the major details of the main issue? Yet somehow in all the ridiculousness of the plot, Bette Davis, Geraldine Fitzgerald, and Humphrey Bogart stand out and are memorable. Davis may have considered this her masterpiece, but it wasn't. Her masterpiece was to come many years later. See more
Jan 31, 2019 The best inspiring romance movie ever made! With the best movie score ever composed!
Harry S May 3, 2018 I watched this many years ago as a child. I still remember the story clearly. Bette Davis' character fully moved through the great and terrible changes from haughty and capable to blind and helpless and bravely facing death. Obviously any film made in 1939 is somewhat dated See more
George S Jun 2, 2017 It takes some silly and not altogether believable sidesteps along the way, but "Dark Victory" garners one of Bette Davis' most memorable performances and, also manages to pull a couple of tears out of this hardended critic's eyes. See more
Ron W Oct 26, 2012 1939 remains the greatest year ever for cinema and Dark Victory is probably its most underrated film. This sentimental melodrama is difficult to watch, heartbreaking and so well made across the board with such a majestic, devastating ending, an excellent moving story and terrific performances from its talented cast with Bette Davis shining in the main role which was incredibly complex but she managed to pull it off and deliver one of her career best performances. Rey M Apr 2, 2011 This never sounded appealing to me. And I was right. It's melodramatic and fairly depressing. About the only good things were Bette Davis' performance, and seeing Humphrey Bogart and Ronald Reagan in supporting roles. See more
