What to Know

Critics Consensus

Dark Places has a strong cast and bestselling source material, but none of it adds up to more than a mediocre thriller that gets tripped up on its own twists.

Paquet-Brenner invests the split-time action with some brooding menace and the cinematographer, Barry Ackroyd, does his best to lend some urgency, even as things spiral from suspense into outright silliness. Go to Full Review

The film, overall, is fatally uncertain of its identity - never quite certain whether it's a gruesome murder-mystery out to shock us or a heavy, character-based drama about a family torn apart. Go to Full Review

All in all, its contrivances might have been indulged more satisfyingly in a TV miniseries. Go to Full Review

A hodgepodge of movie-like parts that fail to ever click, 'Dark Places' is a monumental ball-drop on the part of writer/director Gilles Paquet-Brenner. Go to Full Review

The material plays like a common potboiler mystery with predictable twists and turns. That such weighty subject matter has been reduced to such banality is a tale of true crime itself. Go to Full Review

'Dark Places' is a complete waste of time that wastes Theron, Moretz and the rest of the cast to give us a lazy thriller. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Albus R Dec 21, 2018 Aside from Theron, I can't tell if it's horrible acting or horrible directing, so I'm settling on both.
Draco M Aug 7, 2018 I've read the book and I feel like this movie was doomed by the terrible miscast of Charlize Theron as Libby Day. In the books, Libby is portrayed as a depressed grifter who has no potential to support herself except through monetizing interest in her family's brutal murder. Even in a baseball cap and a loose T-shirt, tall, blonde, slender Theron still looks like a glamorous model, not a hardscrabble, working-class Midwesterner. Her body language, her mannerisms, everything was off for the character she was trying to portray. The rest of the cast did better, but the script burned through plot way too quickly. Too bad, because the book was good and the twist was well developed but not explained adequately in the film adaptation. See more
Hermione W Aug 5, 2018 At this point, I consider myself a big fan of Gillian Flynn. I loved the movie version of "Gone Girl" and I enjoyed reading "Sharp Objects." I decided to go into "Dark Places" without any real knowledge of the story and ultimately, its the weakest story of the three. There is definitely a chance the book tells the story better, but I would not know this as I have not read it. Looking at the movie as a movie, I thought it was okay. The mystery presented is certainly interesting, but it isn't always executed in that way. Segments of the movie feel like a drag and sometimes the story feels like it comes to a halt. I will say I was surprised by the outcome and that's always a good thing in a movie like this. Overall, it's not as impressive as the other stories the author has delivered, but I think it is still worth checking out if you are a fan of hers. See more
Poe L Jun 7, 2018 didn't like it very much
Kylo R Feb 9, 2018 Another one where I have to disagree with the RT score. The 25% rating on here would indicate that it was worse than it was. It wasn't that bad. Nothing earth shaking but watchable. See more
Leia S Jan 13, 2018 If you are looking at Gillian Flynn's books, this one isn't as good as Gone Girl. And neither is the movie. It's not as bad as its 25% rating on Rotten Tomatoes though. It's okay. There's a surprisingly good cast for how few people saw this. It was interesting to see how they unpacked the details of the night of the murders. It's not particularly memorable, but not a bad watch. See more
