In 18th-century Maine, Barnabas Collins (Johnny Depp) presides over the town of Collinsport. A rich and powerful playboy, Barnabas seals his own doom when he breaks the heart of a witch named Angelique (Eva Green). Angelique turns Barnabas into a vampire and buries him alive. Two centuries later, Barnabas escapes from his tomb and finds 1972 Collinsport a very different place. His once-grand estate has fallen into ruin, and the dysfunctional remnants of his family have fared little better.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

The visuals are top notch but Tim Burton never finds a consistent rhythm, mixing campy jokes and gothic spookiness with less success than other Johnny Depp collaborations.

Sad to report, the [Tim] Burton opus is an unnecessarily complicated tale involving too many characters, not to mention an unresolved moral conundrum that has us happily rooting for an unapologetic mass serial killer. Go to Full Review

The only reason to see Dark Shadows is to discover how dire and pointless-how flat-out dreadful-a movie can be even when it has Tim Burton, Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Helena Bonham Carter attached to its flimsy pretext. Go to Full Review

Dark Shadows takes the easy way out by lampooning its source material, simplifying its ‘70s setting through parody, and handling most of the characters like comic relief in an overall treatment that’s beneath everyone involved. Go to Full Review

Mar 30, 2019 Really funny and inventive. Cool fights. Really hope for a sequel!
Rey R Jan 9, 2019 For a movie in general, Dark Shadows was okay. However, for a Tim Burton movie it was disappointing.
George M Nov 24, 2018 The set, special effects and costumes were amazing. But the plot had a ton of holes even for a fantasy. Like why would parents commit their daughter for having an imaginary friend? See more
Anakin M Nov 13, 2018 A middling vampiric romp. Tim Burton is constantly trying too hard to be Gothic in style. His humor is rather charming and funny at times, but also leaves you cold with empty writing. Burton know show to direct a scene with a pleasant visual flair, but his sequences feel so routine now. Despite Dark Shadows' phenomenal cast, the acting is certainly just passable. They all play up the camp well enough at least. Michelle Pfeiffer is so pleasingly sarcastic. Johnny Depp is goofy enough with his point blank dialogue and witty comebacks. He's not a scary vampire though. Eva Green is gorgeous delivering a sensual and strange performance as a spurned witch lover. Lastly in the main cast, Bella Heathcote is the staring eyed pale girl we are accustomed to in Tim Burton's fare, but she is charming enough. Furthermore, Jackie Earle Haley makes a believable drunkard. Chloe Grace Moretz is a tired teenage girl with usual angst attached. Helena Bonham Carter is an oddly standard doctor of no peculiar remark. Jonny Lee Miller is wasted as the typical negligent father. At least we got a neat Christopher Lee cameo. The makeup is overly pale even by Burton's standards. The costumes are gorgeous to time period accurate, but feel otherworldly next to Burton's grim aesthetic. The music is nice, but bland. Alice Cooper's stellar cameo is glorious and adds much needed warmth to the movie's soundtrack. The other 1970's musical selections are cool pieces, but feel rather standard choices for any film set in the 70's. Overall, Dark Shadows is a fun, yet silly comedy that wants to be taken seriously. I wish Burton kept things funny and went straight comedy parody, instead of attempting dramatic moral moments scattered throughout. See more
Harry G Nov 12, 2018 A fun creepy funny film that fans of Johnny Depp should especially enjoy.
Hermione L Oct 6, 2018 Dark Shadows has a few problems. It's tonally inconsistent, unable to find a way to appeal to fans of the source material who're more willing to accept it as a parody and regular moviegoers and having one of the stranger cases of disproportionate retribution out there (It can't be! Men rejecting women was supposed to be mythical! Women rejecting men, okay. But it's the vampire treatment for you, buddy because...she's Eva Green, I guess and Eva Green's frickin' hot). There's also a twist that's there just for the hell of it. Yes, there's foreshadowing but it's too subtle to notice and anyway, it's only for the sake of parodying soap opera twists. The screenwriters even straight-up tell you "There's a twist. Shut up, fanboys!" Nevertheless, the visuals and set design all reek of sweet Tim Burton goodness, there are a couple of funny moments and Johnny Depp's performance actually is entertaining. I don't think anyone will consider Dark Shadows Tim Burton's best film but I don't regret seeing this movie. It is one of his more forgettable ones, however :( See more
