Most movies are made by males and show women enthralled by men. This movie knows better. Go to Full Review

This film can be seen on the small screen, since it’s not big, but make sure you have some good resolution on your TV or you’ll miss some of the more elegant work of the year. Go to Full Review

Only McCormack manages to breathe any urgency into a tale that takes far too long to escape the fate of too many films set in Venice, in which San Marco and the Grand Canal's gondola fleet overwhelm story and characters. Go to Full Review

There's an essential insipidity here, matched by its predictable music score. Go to Full Review

Draco M Mar 10, 2018 I love this story of woman learning about pleasure, education and independence from her mother, and how her sexual knowing and inn er strength wind up inspiring love and courage in the men and women around her. a sexy feminist tale! See more
Leia M Sep 11, 2017 Loved this film--everything about it. The lush scenes of Venice, the utterly ravishing costumes, the great cast and most of all--the story! It was so totally romantic and captivating. And the ending was just so moving! A beautiful movie experience! See more
Finn W Aug 14, 2017 On my all-time favorites List, an adaptation of a true-story of Venice at the beginning of the catholic Inquisition. Some of the slo-mo & transitions are not perfect, but there's so much else that's top-shelf Herskovitz ("Legends of the Fall") that those are easily overlooked - a terrific story where one really engages & cares about the Leads. There's a fine accompanying soundtrack where the gifted Rachel Portman is called-upon for "Additional Music" and some mesmerizing screen performances & background casting. Love & heartbreak & love & miscues & love & deeper love in spite of everything - it's seldom better or in such quantity on the screen. A favorite activity is identifying some of the best scenes in all of cinema, such as appears in "A Very Long Engagement." In this production there is no better shot of the "look-of-love" in all of cinema than Catherine McCormack's in the 2nd love scene (at about 1:06) after she furloughs herself temporarily as a courtesan. Jackie Bissett is still an eye magnet even in her later middle-age. There's so much to like ... owned & watched several times - always terrific and affecting when the mood strikes. | PS: Anyone noticed the similar appearance of McCormack & Alexa Davalos? They could play sisters with a good script. Anybody got one ready to go ...? | - Norm de Guerre See more
Kylo R May 31, 2011 This Is one of my Favorite Movies, But Then I'm a Sucker for History, Unrequited Love, Empowered Women in History,Period Movies & Costumes, & Awesome Scenery & Love Scenes.I Am No Women's Libber, in fact I am a Girlie Girl in more ways than I care to admit, but I do enjoy learning the History of the 1st Women who were allowed by Society, or the Out Skirts of it, such as Courtesans & Geisha"s who were well learned in many Arts, including Politics, History, The Events of the Day, Music, Poetry, Etc. & played Instruments, Wrote & Read Poetry & other Books, along with Skills of Love.As I mentioned, I am a Girly Girl, so the History of Platform Shoes was irresitible to me , as Venice in this Period ,is the Birthplace of the Platform Shoe.Women of Wealth, Stature, Fashion, as well as Courtesans wore shoes up to 2 Feet High(needing Aid to Walk in some cases)to keep their Gowns from getting wet in the waters that often overflowed the walkways of Venice's famous canals & streets.More importantly than these details that fascinate me, is the fact that our Heroine is the 1st Published Female Poet in recorded History. She also had influence on some of the Most Important Men of the Time, & in one case, trying not to spoil your fun, there were Dominatrix Methods applied to a King!!!! I recommend this Movie all the time.On A trip to Europe with my European Hubby(R.I.P), I simply had to seek out some of the locations when I was in Venice. It is safe to say, this Movie, for many reasons, is Dear to My Heart & I own it as well See more
