Daaaaaali! might not tell you much about the man it portrays and it certainly won’t have an easy time at the box office, but it is a charming, engaging and intelligent film that cements Dupieux’s reputation as a fearless and highly entertaining filmmaker.

Dupieux shares with his subject an obstinacy to forge ahead and in so doing attains a silliness that becomes dangerously close to the sublime.

If I had a camera and the resources Dupieux has, I’d do the exact same [film] and wouldn’t feel remorseful about it, either.

In a world full of biopics that take themselves far too seriously, Dupieux is a breath of fresh, surreal air.

Without Buñuel or David Lynch in the world, perhaps Dupieux is the last filmmaker to seek, through his mind and dreams—rather than through special effects—a creative alternative to reality. [Full review in Spanish]

Daaaaaali! is as fake and annoying as its title. The cast is great, the film is not.

As in some of Buñuel's great surrealist films, Dupieux's work is based on the vignette, iconic moment, the crazy artifact not exempt from criticism, and happy bewilderment. [Full review in Spanish]

An infectious celebration of an eccentric man...a flamboyantly outlandish portrait that is consistently amusing, though it elicits a stream of chuckles rather than a flurry of belly-laughs.

The nagging feeling that soon sets in and doesn’t quite slink away is that Dupieux’s surrealist homage arrives always at a remove: a bit too little, a bit too late.

The more you explain “DAAAAAALI!”, the more confounding it becomes, and your patience with such nonsense may vary. Its cheerful refusal to make sense is something that Dali himself, at least, might have appreciated.

Thankfully, Daaaaaali! isn’t another Dali biopic — it’s another Quentin Dupieux, and even when his influences are on his cinematic sleeve, nobody else really makes movies like him.
