Critics Consensus

Whether it's being presented as D-Tox or Eye See You, this Stallone starring vehicle is a slapdash thriller to actively avoid.

Han M Mar 19, 2019 While FBI agent Jake Malloy (Sylvester Stallone) pursues a serial killer who targets police officers, his former partner becomes a victim. At his partner's home, the murderer calls Malloy from Malloy's home. The killer says Malloy pursued him earlier for a series of prostitute murders; in revenge, he kills Mary, Malloy's girlfriend. Malloy pursues the killer, only to find that he appears to have committed suicide. Three months later, Malloy descends into alcoholism. After a suicide attempt, Malloy's best friend and supervising officer, Agent Chuck Hendricks (Charles S. Dutton), enrolls Malloy in a rehabilitation program for law enforcement officers run by Dr. John "Doc" Mitchell (Kris Kristofferson), a former cop and recovering alcoholic. Hendricks stays in Wyoming to ensure Malloy will be okay. Malloy meets several other officers who are patients in the clinic, including Peter Noah (Robert Patrick), an arrogant and paranoid ex-SWAT officer; Frank Slater (Christopher Fulford), a cynical, opinionated British police officer; Willie Jones (Courtney B. Vance), a religious homicide detective; Jaworski (Jeffrey Wright), an alcoholic narcotics cop who attempted suicide; Lopez (Angela Alvarado), a foul-mouthed LAPD officer; and McKenzie (Robert Prosky), an elderly member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police who witnessed his partner's murder. He meets several staff members, including Doc's assistant and mechanic Hank (Tom Berenger) and compassionate resident psychiatrist and nurse Jenny Munroe (Polly Walker), with whom Malloy develops a bond. A blizzard seals everyone in the rehab center without outside communication. Jenny finds the body of Connor, a troubled patient who apparently killed himself, but Jenny believes Connor would have sought help. The next morning Hank finds another apparent suicide, but Malloy believes otherwise... Danny Graydon of BBC Films said: "Clearly, Hollywoods confidence in this film is lower than Pee-Wee Herman's Oscar chances, and their instincts are right: a boring, formulaic mix of serial killers and stalk'n'slash, this will not reinvigorate Sylvester Stallone's action hero status or loosen his maniacal destruction of the quality control button". "D-Tox" is hardly one of Sylvester Stallones better ones. It is a poor man´s attempt of creating something similar to David Fincher´s excellent "Seven" with a touch of "The Thing" in the who-dunnit part of the story. After the movie was finished in 1999, Universal Studios decided to screen it to a test audience. All the screenings of the first cut got very bad reactions, and the film was then shelved while re-shoots and story changes were being done. A new ending was also filmed in which the main villain is killed in a different way - but even after re-shoots and title changes (the movie's working titles were "Detox", "The Outpost" and "Eye See You"), Universal Studios didn't care for it. After test screenings for the new version also got negative response, it finally received a limited release three years after completion. "D-Tox" is simply a poor actioneer/thriller and not much else. See more
Hermione S Aug 3, 2018 It is good, but not great, but one thing I will say great, is Sylvester Stallone's performance.
Rey S Feb 28, 2018 I thought the movie was really good I love suspense and how the guy called and disguised his voice.
Leia L Nov 10, 2017 A crime thriller which would have been much more effective if the writer played fair with the audience by dropping some clues along the way instead of having the reveal surprise both the character and the audience at the same time. I like a fighting chance to figure it out as it moves along. Typical understated Stallone performance. Wonderful supporting cast. See more
Harry M Feb 1, 2017 When you consider that OSCAR was a wide release, the executives at UNIVERSAL must have been very confused. This is far from a great movie but it is entertaining. I think that the editing and reshoots caused some problems but this deserved a release. See more
