Poet, romantic and sword fighter Cyrano de Bergerac (Jose Ferrer) loves the beautiful Roxane (Mala Powers), but although he is proud enough of his bulbous proboscis that he regularly duels those who dare mock it, he fears she could never love a man with such an enormous nose. When he learns that she loves the handsome guardsman Christian (William Prince), Cyrano provides the tongue-tied young man with the words of love and devotion he wishes he could say to Roxane himself.

Although having genuine qualities in their own right, both performance and production fail to catch the essence of the play. Go to Full Review

Ferrer dominates the film. Like him, it sparkles at the outset. But it begins to die a long while before he does. Go to Full Review

I feel this is a fairly stock Cyrano, played the way almost any competent (or even exceptional) actor might have played it. Go to Full Review

The magnificent acting of José Ferrer and the clarion rhetoric of Edmond Rostand's semi-classic drama are not quite enough to conceal the central weaknesses of the story. Go to Full Review

Jan 31, 2019 The best romance movie ever made!
Han S Jan 22, 2019 Josï¿ 1/2 (C) Ferrer's performance as the suave, swashbuckling protagonist of this near-identical interpretation of Rostand's 1897 play is absolutely superb in every way. My only criticism of this film is the portrayal of Lady Roxanne falls flat in so many ways under the acting of Mala Powers, and thus undermines the motives of both Cyrano and Christian in terms of falling for her and attempting to woo her. Other than that, this film is an absolute masterpiece, and I personally feel there is not a better interpretation of this classic play than this. An absolutely marvelous work of cinema. See more
Hagrid R Aug 8, 2018 While this limited production creatively hides many associated flaws due to its lack of funding it cannot disguise, ironically, the big mouth of the unsympathetic center whose long winded rambles have passed the style of the day. Cyrano's poetry is undeniable, but I secretly rooted for someone, anyone, to shut his babblings. For me the failure was to somehow get me to care about the braggart, and that didn't happen. The technique, admirable, but when Cyrano cried I thought "good". See more
Hermione G Jul 6, 2017 Josè Ferrer is fantastic as the poet Cyrano De Bergerac, the title character who's just as talented with a sword as he is with his words. He could get the girl of his dreams, if it weren't for the giant, protruding monster of a nose he has. As I said before Ferrer really does a great job here, making a character that could easily come across as a walking cartoon character, instead becomes a layered, charming, romantic, and ultimately tragic character. This led to a well deserved oscar win for Ferrer. The sets and particularly costumes are great, and help draw you in to the tragically romantic tale, and the film just has some great, memorable scenes, especially the classic balcony scene. So what didn't I like about the film? The dialogue is definitely a little too thick for it's on good, and is repeated sometimes too fast for the viewer to really soak in some great lines. It also has an ending that feels rushed, and will still being impactful, feels like it still could've been executed better. However Cyrano De Bergerac is still well worth your time, especially if you're looking for a timeless cautionary tale about not letting one flaw or insecurity define you, or a well acted, funny, tragic romance. Poe S May 16, 2017 Gifted man with words and sword but having a very large nose woos a woman he originally thought would not be interested in him but finds this to be untrue when he helps an attractive man win her affections by giving him his words to say to her. Straight-forward adaptation of the play. Not poorly made, just something not up my alley. See more
Leia S Apr 8, 2017 The greatest Cyrano that ever graced the silver screen. Ferrer brings the iconic character to live with excellent delivery. The supporting cast is not as grandiose as our main hero, but in a play about a man who both loves and hates himself there is only room for one attraction. See more
