Cube sometimes struggles with where to take its intriguing premise, but gripping pace and an impressive intelligence make it hard to turn away.

Cube is a film boxed in by its own intriguing central premise. Go to Full Review

Cube was named best Canadian debut feature at Toronto last year, and there's no questioning Natali, clearly a visionary, is an important new talent. Go to Full Review

With its enigmatic and simple premise, this works best as a series of nerve-stretching suspense sequences as the characters try to get past the killing traps. Go to Full Review

Cube is an interesting low budget, sci-fi horror from the 90’s. While that low-budget feel is present in Cube, director Vincenzo Natali does a great job of masking it with a variety of clever choices. Go to Full Review

Apr 17, 2019 A horror film that really strikes that feel of isolation like SAW; at first I thought the different traps would play a big part but it turns out the movie was focusing on the degenerating psychosis of the victims; I gathered a huge annoyance to each characters' emphasized arrogance of themselves and their immediate uncooperativeness with each other; Besides the idiot cop who took a complete 180 in morale (and intelligence), it appears that each character seems to grow a care for the others and decreasing worry for their own lives. Its only speculation though, as they probably just finally realized that teamwork was needed to make it out alive; It was an ok movie, I took it less serious after they stopped everything so the director could get his view on society shoved into our ears. Apr 14, 2019 The environment of the movie is uncomfortable which is suiting. Although some poor performances the movie is entertaining and its premise is compelling. See more
Han S Mar 28, 2019 A strange, satisfying but far from flawless low-budget science-fiction horror drama. A group of strangers wake up to find themselves in a huge cube consisting of equal-sized rooms, some of which contain fatal traps. They don't know each other, why they're there, where they are or how to get out. As the film passes, the group are inevitably picked off and we learn more of who they are. There's much to be commended, especially in an era of cinema replete with prequels, cinematic universes, backstory and origin stories where everything that can be explained is explained. Though this film has a (kind of) tidy ending, there's much we don't know; a lot is left to our imagination, for us to fill in the blanks - or to leave them blank if we want to. Is the film about conspiracy theories; a Lord of the Flies style experiment in human savagery; an exercise in sadistic ways of dying? Other things? All of them? None of them? That's the appeal and potential frustration of the film. Despite a script that is at times badly flawed and some very limited performances, this is a film that works because of what it doesn't tell us, making the best of a clearly limited budget. Sometimes less really is more. See more
