Critics Consensus

John Waters' musical ode to the teen rebel genre is infectious and gleefully camp, providing star Johnny Depp with the perfect vehicle in which to lampoon his pin-up image.

It would be excessively generous to call Cry-Baby a satire, but its parody of what enchanted and excited teenagers more than 30 years ago is energetically delivered by Waters and the enthusiastic cast.

Packed with catchy musical numbers, John Waters’s Cry-Baby is a riotous satire of ’50s teen idol and JD films that still has something to say about class in America.

In fact, the movie is so good- humored that it stands in marked contrast to almost every other mainstream American film out now...

The overall tone may be comedic, but Waters wants the romance to be real, which is ultimately what makes Cry-Baby work so well.

"Your Honor, could we take Wanda the fuck home?" It's really hard to properly review most John Waters flicks. They're not meant to be taken seriously so we forgive any production shortcomings but they aren't always funny enough to justify that full forgiveness. 'Cry-Baby' falls into that realm for me. It's enjoyable enough as a fast-paced bizarro musical romp but it's not quite memorable enough to make me ever want to revisit it.

If you took Elvis movies and Grease and threw em in a blender at John Waters house, this would be the outcome. It's ridiculous, but a lot of fun, with some great songs.

To be honest, even if it's at times funny in overall it's an awful movie. Everyone is trying to be so bad, to be worse of the worst that ultimately it makes you sick. The only good thing about this movie is soundtrack which is awesome.
