In the 1640s England, King Charles I is engaged in a power struggle with Parliament, and civil war seems imminent to House of Commons member Oliver Cromwell, who's preparing to depart for the American colonies. When he's asked to stay to fight for the Parliamentary cause, however, Cromwell agrees and proves himself a brilliant leader of the Roundhead army. Soon, it's up to him to lead his army to victory over the king's Cavaliers and take back England for the people.

Richard Harris, as Cromwell, schleps around the kingdom reciting epigrams and looking distracted. He doesn't inhabit the role or even seem to care much about it. Go to Full Review

The script [has] bitten off a more complex slice of history than it can hope to chew. Go to Full Review

An impressive cast of Brit thespians yelling dialogue in that declamatory manner that clues you in on the fact that this is important stuff. Go to Full Review

Cromwell is an excellent historical spectacle movie, the kind of lavishly mounted picture that film observers keep saying are gone forever because of the high costs of making them. Go to Full Review

Mar 18, 2019 Dated, but accidentally brilliant. In no small part for Sir Alec Guinness's personal research and dedication to the role, be brought his own craft to the role, Richard Harris plays Cromwell as a hardliner, a brutal, and uncompromising character, betraying his interests in playing first fiddle, to satisfy his own hunger for power, under the guise of a religious war, and republican ideals. Sadly however the acting on the parliamentarian side is dated, the accents all too samey, full of RP and BBC English, not properly reflecting the character of the times, often the acting of extras is laughable, and the battle sense filmed to please the censor, not the audience, or source material, and with that comical level of violence of the time, does not stand up. Costumes are as good as can be expected, but the colours are mostly bright, not rich and deep as they should be, no doubt a limitation of the films of the time. Badly in need of a remake. See more
Oct 20, 2018 Fantastic movie. Surprisingly good. For those that don't understand real Christian history it will be a bit of a shock. From a conservative perspective this is a great movie See more

Obi-Wan Kenobi, and the self-interest of the ruling class, and leads a civil war to install Parliament as the ultimate ruler of England. Tthe film sticks to most of the facts and it is interesting. Draco W Sep 25, 2017 The depiction of Henrietta Maria was unforgivable. Rupert, Manchester, Fairfax, Strafford and even Cromwell and Charles, themselves were poorly represented in many ways. She majesty generalissima, though? Like I said, that was unforgivable. The movie clearly wanted you to feel some sympathy for King Charles, but not for his cause. Their solution was essentially to make him the victim of a domineering wife. Or maybe they don't know the difference between a strong woman and a domineering one. By manipulating characters, though, they manipulate the whole story of the war. They even attribute a religious speech by a Royalist to Cromwell, and misrepresent some of Cromwell's victories. The icing on the cake was poor dialogue, poor music, and poor acting (despite having a cast of some Britain's greatest actors). See more
