Some times these scripts just don't age well. This one has aged like milk that was rancid on arrival to the market. If you can get through it, more power to you.

How this wasn't made by Hammer or Amicus, I'll never know. It's a tip notch horror flick. You get Cushing, Lee, Freddie Francis directing, a mad scientist plot and a Victorian era setting. The only flaw is the actual reveal of the monster, which looks underwhelming and cheap. Even by early 1970s standards.
