What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Crazies isn't top-shelf Romero, but its blend of genre thrills and social subtext should still be enough to satisfy discerning horror fans.

Romero does build some intense tension around the scenario, and the questions of who's going to survive it, and whether they'll deserve to. Go to Full Review

The Crazies offers no hope, no comfort and sure as hell no happy ending. Go to Full Review

An inept science-fiction film from George A. Romero. Go to Full Review

This movie is a lot of people just yelling at each other. There had to be more interesting ways to approach this idea. However, knowing what we know about society's response to COVID...maybe it's not so far off. Go to Full Review

The movie feels like picking up a newspaper from the early 70s and scanning the downbeat headlines. (Truffaut said that The Night of the Hunter was like “A horrifying news item retold by small children”; The Crazies is a newscast delivered by the insane.) Go to Full Review

Even if Romero steals from himself to come up with his plot and themes for The Crazies, the film deserves its place as a cult classic on a purely cinematic level. Go to Full Review

Mar 29, 2019 The Crazies is a dark, gritty examination of human nature under stress. Horror springs from several sources: the potentially apocalypctic scale of the disaster, the bloody clash between the townsfolk and dehumanized authority figures, the irrational behavior of the infected, and the panicked reactions of the supposedly sane. Shot on location in idyllic rural Pensylvania, the film strives for a realistic aesthetic and effectively uses military stock footage, carefully orchestrated postproduction sound and silence, and occasionally jarring editing to compensate for budgetary limitations and depict the chaos spawned by a horrific situation so plausible that is is barely science fiction. Leia R Nov 4, 2018 The Crazies 1973 was action packed non - stop . I get where Romero was going. He never took his foot off the accelerator. The military drum cadence music was hilarious every time George A. Romero cut to scene's of the Big wig's of government power. The blood was a little on (pastel side). Over all I like it . See more
Abraham M Nov 3, 2018 The new one is way better. This one is interesting like the new one, but it's way too all over the place.
Harry S Dec 13, 2017 It doesn't exactly hold up very well, but The Crazies does boast good acting, a great premise, a good script, and the strong direction of George A. Romero. Not all of the scares hold up, but there are a few good ones. I'm not surprised the film bombed at the box office back in '73, but I'm also not surprised it gained such a strong cult following. It's not exactly up to modern standards, but by 70s standards this is a very good film. See more
Draco M Nov 9, 2017 More fairly heavy handed social commentary, that Romero did best. Some really dark moments are handled blunt and matter-of-factly, which kind of makes them more disturbing... See more
Draco L Jun 24, 2017 After the greatness that was Night of the Living Dead (and a pair of duds I haven't seen) George A. Romero brought out this film and though it doesn't reach the heights of his debut it does still offer plenty itself despite being somewhat similar with its "us" and "them" theme. The violence is precisely what you would expect from Romero but it hits harder than his debut because the violence isn't committed by some mythical idea of the living dead but instead is committed by real people be it towards people "The Crazies" know or by authority towards civilians. The manic editing, the paranoia fueled plot and the confusion exhibited by those involved adds to the whole affair and even though it isn't all that deep or quite frankly all that well produced it still offers just enough to make it above average. Just don't go expecting the same kind of greatness that Romero showed in the original 'Dead' trilogy. See more
