Minghella's movie is stern and lucid for the most part and immensely enlivened by the presence of Zellweger and Hoffman who bring amusement to their roles. Go to Full Review

Grim in places, and at times gratuitous, this is still terrific five-hanky drama with top-flight technical work, horrifically spectacular action, subtle introspection, rich characters and a love story to die for. Go to Full Review
David Walsh World Socialist Web Site Feb 15, 2021
This unconvincing "timelessness" is the film's weakest aspect. The work takes the form of a series of disconnected and discrete episodes, without essential inner connection, and becomes somewhat tedious as a result. Go to Full Review

While it may not be the best film of the year, it is still a solid effort worthy of most of its pre-release hype. Go to Full Review

Theodore G Mar 12, 2019 This movie is not good but its interesting to see what Civil War life was like.
Feb 11, 2019 one of my favorite movies to this day
Finn L Jan 7, 2019 This is an artistic take on the ravages of war. Cold Mountain was adapted from the long, complex novel by Charles Frazier, and clearly proved to be a challenge for Minghella to capture on film. The movie has its share of structural problems, and may be a little longer than seems necessary, but it rarely lost my attention. I would not place this in the top echelon of end-of-the-year motion pictures, but it's certainly a successful adaptation, features numerous memorable performances (mostly by the supporting players), and is worth a post-holiday expenditure of time and money. One thing that cannot be denied is the effectiveness of the film's look. This is a gorgeous film to watch, with deserved credit given to cinematographer John Seale. See more
Hermione S Jan 5, 2019 Renee Zellweger won an Academy Award for the hammiest performance in the history of cinema???? Furthermore we are expected to believe that English, Australian and American multi-millionaires are dirt poor Southerners? This has to be the most ridiculous movie of all time. See more
Harry G Dec 31, 2018 Most of the merits here can be assigned to the wonderful production design, cinematography, and soundtrack that come together to create something that is beautiful to look at and captures that certain something that an epic needs to have. It also does well to portray the horrors of war, in particular how much distance, both physical and emotional, it puts between those who must fight it and those left behind. Unfortunately, much of the film's importance rests on the love and story of two people trying to find their way back to each other, and it's on this front that it fails to affect, proving that the 'Cold' in its title is a bit too fitting. It is well-acted, however, with Zellweger and Hoffman bringing some much needed warmth to the screen. Overall, it's certainly a visual splendour, but at the end of the day, its reach somewhat exceeds its grasp. See more
