Oscar-winning fantasy in which the residents of a Florida rest home get a new lease of life when they stumble across an alien "fountain of youth" in a disused holiday home. Unbeknown to them, aliens have been using the swimming pool in the house to store their cocooned brethren, giving the waters a powerful, rejuvenating quality.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Though it may be too sentimental for some, Ron Howard's supernatural tale of eternal youth is gentle and heartwarming, touching on poignant issues of age in the process.

"Cocoon" is one of the sweetest, gentlest science-fiction movies I’ve seen, a hymn to the notion that aliens might come from outer space and yet still be almost as corny and impulsive as we are. Go to Full Review

Though the film is impressive in most details... Cocoon is most compelling for the tone of tearful hope that Howard has been able to create. Go to Full Review

"Cocoon" really is a pretty enjoyable film; it's optimistic, and filled with warmth and love. Go to Full Review

Even the heartrending "E.T." was basically old-fashioned melodrama in a new sci-fi wrapping; this one, in contrast, manages to be quite provocative at the same time it's thoroughly entertaining. Go to Full Review

Mr. Howard has a terrific sense of humor, compassion for his characters, and a willingness to look beyond the obvious for revelatory details and touches. “Cocoon” is a first-class example of popular moviemaking. Go to Full Review

Kylo S Dec 25, 2018 What a lovely film this is. Yes it's cheesy in a lot of it but it's fun and really moved my soul the first time I watched it. Well filmed with a great score this had all the right pieces and it was a masterpiece. Only complaint for me is that the Oscar went to the wrong actor, Wilford Bremley really shoulda won his role was more powerful and moving than Amache's was. He won it just as a way of respect for his career. See more
Anakin R Nov 24, 2018 Metaphor for the baby boomer generation. So if you had the chance to take 30 people into space and live forever you would choose all the old people from a home and not your daughter or granson and instead leave them behind thinking you are dead? Selfish old beggers. See more
Kylo S Nov 19, 2018 A very good easy watch sci-fi comedy. If not a classic very close to one
Poe M Oct 28, 2018 Although not a well-known movie, this movie is really good, with a captivating story, a cast and other special effects. Highly recommend. See more
