Critics Consensus

The rich colors, sweet songs, adorable mice and endearing (if suffering) heroine make Cinderella a nostalgically lovely charmer.

On her own, Snow White could have just been a one-off fairy tale heroine. But with the success of Cinderella, the very idea of the “Disney princess” archetype was born. Go to Full Review

You could argue that Cinderella is worth rewatching in 2019 for the animation — which truly is gorgeous — but that also gets you into some quagmire thanks to the poor 2005 Diamond Edition restoration that Disney continues to re-release... Go to Full Review

Albus P Mar 14, 2019 Cinderella (1950) is a Disney film directed by Clyde Geronimi, Wilfred Jackson and Hamilton Luske. Very good voice acting especially Ilene Woods as Cinderella. Good and iconic characters especially the Fairy Godmother. Steady cinematography with some cool shots. Really good animation especially for the time. Good setting especially with the house. Good style with the colour scheme. Good sound design. Good and steady dialogue. Good editing. Very good music with some iconic songs. Okay story nothing special, and not my type of story any way. Very good comedy. Very good atmosphere especially when the evil step mother is around. The film is also quiet enjoyable. Over all I give it a 7/10 - very good See more
Abraham Feb 15, 2019 While it does focus a bit too much on the side characters, the side characters themselves are still memorable and fun. Lady Tremaine is a tremendous Disney Villain, and definitely not a woman that I would want to come across in real life(if she was real, that is). She also may be one of the best characters Frank Thomas animated as the facial expressions on her do look quite menacingly memorable. I love the fact that Lucifer is named after Satan, and it really fits his character. While the songs are great, I do have to critize Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo. Compared to Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah, it's not as strong because of the lyrics. The Cinderella song has a bit too much gibberish written to it that it makes me feel like it was a desperate song with the writing. The Prince is very generic and not given much screen time, but this has been a usual problem for the old Disney films with the main lead being a princess(Snow White and Princess Auora most notably). What would've made the film stronger is that I would have liked it if the Prince and Cinderella had some time to sit down and talk to each other and not immediately jump to it being midnight. That way, you could insert it into the film but also cut out some of the scenes with the side characters that aren't really needed. While the animation isn't as strong as the animation of the Golden Age films, it still has some nice effects and backgrounds to it. I love the scenery of the castle(inside and out), and I do love the animation involving the sequence with Cinderella and Fairy Godmother. One of my personal favorite scenes involves the side characters of Jaq and Lucifer. The scene where Jaq has to sneak around and distract Lucifer from the other mice getting the corn is a well-paced, well-scored sequence that I always remembered. There's this one animation Ward Kimball did of Lucifer that is just a hilarious, literally a second long shot that always makes me laugh. The scene where he waves his arms around with his eyes popping out as he knows which cup Gus is hiding under is possibly one of the funniest Disney animations I've ever seen. I have a lot of strong sympathy for the main character. It really does feel like an actual human inserted into the animation world and has to adapt to her surroundings. She does have a lot of emotion, and it's expressed when she needs help or breaks down. The other side characters I didn't mention do have likeable personalities to where I remember them just enough. The stepsisters do annoy me a little, and I do find it really funny that Anastasia has that name. They do have character to them though, and they don't have a lot of screen time. I also absolutely love the opening song, A Dream is a Wish your Heart Makes, and it's used very well in a different direction in the scene where Cinderella breaks down. While a bit flawed with story and focus, Cinderella may be one of the more nostalgic Disney films to people through its warm atmosphere, attention to detail, and balance of emotions that do connect it to my childhood as well. 3.5/4 See more
