What to Know

Critics Consensus

John Carpenter revs up Christine into a brisk thrill ride whose sharp direction, lively performances, and stylish flourishes make its absurd premise easy to forgive.

The movie is fun in a slick, predictable way -- it's old hat, but it's done with flash. Go to Full Review

Apr 25, 2019 This is just a fun movie. It gives a little extra for people that love their cars. The acting and directing is alright.
Hagrid R Apr 22, 2019 The great execution of what we see as the opposite of Iron Giant or E.T.
Han S Apr 22, 2019 Another Stephen King movie that hasn't aged that well. Set in 1978 Christine follows two High School seniors named Arnie (Keith Gordon) and Dennis (John Stockwell). Dennis plays wide receiver for their highschool and is quite popular while Arnie is very much a loner and gets picked on. One day on the way back from home they spot a beat up 1958 Plymouth Fury. The car is for sale and Arnie falls in love immediately. Dennis thinks its a piece of junk and doesn't think it's a good buy, but Arnie buys it anyways. Arnie cleans the car up (rather mysteriously fast) and calls the car Christine. But, this is where things start going weird for everyone involved. The car seems to have a mind of its own and starts to change Arnie. Arnie starts to get more confidence and even starts dating someone, but he also starts to get a lot meaner and more violent. Dennis starts to notice the changes, but Arnie doesn't believe anything his old friend says. Then anyone that seems to get in Arnie's way ends up dead. Is it the car or Arnie? So the movie does have a creepy vibe, but in the end it's a killer car. If that scares ya it scares ya, but for the most part kinda silly and B movieish. The movie has some cool moments (the car on fire chasing down a dude is an iconic scene), but for the most part a pretty forgettable movie now. Also, the movie was apparently not going to get a Rated R rating (which at the time they thought wouldn't advertise well), so they made the characters curse...a freaking lot. It's laughable how much they drop the F bomb for no reason. Overall, it's worth a rental at best. See more
Mar 8, 2019 This movie did not age well. It was so so in the beginning and now it just comes across super odd.
Abraham L Feb 26, 2019 I'm a huge retro horror fan and a even bigger Stephen King fan. I had passed this up for years but finally watched it tonight. Is it Stephen Kings best adaptation? I would say easilly in the top 10 of his works made into a movie. However when it comes to posessed cars this is the second best losing to another Stephen King movie. That movie is the pure cheesefest Maximum Overdrive. Actually might be a tie. John Carpenter is a master of horror who in his day showed he could compete with George Romero , Alfred Hitchcock , and Wes Craven. He created a fun and suspenseful movie that knew what it was. I highly reccomend it to any horror fan who hasn't seen it especially those who like a little gore. A added surprise was Roberts Blossom from Deranged starring as the guy who sells Arnie the car. Poe R Jan 16, 2019 This movie has aged (36 years old) and you can tell, hence the original impact is no longer felt. But it still has a couple good scares and a fun 80s plot. As the antagonist you end up hating it so its good that it can evoke thar emotion. The acting is really good especially for the 80s, but the best parts by far are the score and the direction. Imo this just solidifies that John Carpenter is 'the' master of horror as he can even make a horror about a car seem interesting (yes, props go out to Stephen King too obviously). See more
