What to Know

Critics Consensus

While bolstered by strong performances from Sam Rockwell and Anjelica Huston, Choke struggles to capture the tone of Chuck Palahniuk's novel.

'Choke' never manages to be as edgy, amusing, insightful or plain messy as you'd hope it would be, especially considering its 'naughty' promotional poster and the distribution of anal beads as a marketing device. Go to Full Review

Choke is a confused sex comedy by Clark Gregg that blunders around for 90-odd minutes trying to look butch and sensitive. Go to Full Review

Choke is a film that might disgust you, intrigue you, make you feel sympathy for a wretched character or two, but it certainly won’t leave a lasting impression. Go to Full Review

Rey R May 7, 2018 What many critics say is Palahniuk's failure to draw a thread through the plot and subplots, Clark Gregg quite eloquently emphasizes and subsequently makes convenient to follow for non-readers See more
Rey M Apr 11, 2018 This may sound strange, but Sam Rockwell choking on food is really compelling.
Hagrid S Nov 7, 2017 I read the book many years prior and even before Fight Club struck it big on home video, one of those books you laugh at or cringe about. This film felt like a dream come true, Rockwell was a choice that seemed great, what could go wrong? The biggest issue I have with the film is the deviation from the source material, Palahniuk wrote a great book but the essence is nowhere to be found. I feel Gregg wasn't the right choice for the writer and director, the film has no core, the plot elements are there from the book but Gregg leaves everything super vague. The film plays it very safe, it needed the biting satire that made the book so funny, this has moments but never clicks together. The wall building, the actual choking and the book are quickly tossed to the side for what ends up a mixed film. There a few more books I want to see as films but this fell to yhe area of way too safe, you can't make a safe Palahniuk adaptation. 07-11-2017. See more
George G Jul 20, 2017 Having a hard time judging it separately from the novel. If I did, it would get 2 stars.
Leia R Oct 29, 2009 Despite the very silly pretence and characters, Choke keeps you on the edge of your seat and Chuck Palahniuk's twist in the finale returns some of the more crazy story elements back to reality See more
Hermione L Oct 17, 2008 Gave this a re-watch off the To-Watch Pile today, and I'm pleased to say it holds up rather well, though I was forced to reel in my initial impressions ever so slightly, a half-star, as this isn't perfect, but it's a ton of fun. This is a terrific adaptation of Palahniuk's novel of the same name, I was actually a little surprised by how many of the vivid details this film kept. Recommended. See more
