The film has the eerie atmosphere and outstanding makeup effects of a good fantasy thriller. But it's way too choppy to build any tension. Go to Full Review

This is an enjoyable movie, but the dialogue is too heavy with scientific terms, which can be distracting from the story. Go to Full Review

Ron R Apr 26, 2019 This is the tagline of Maurice Haems's Chimera which is a very well-made science fiction film. The tag line is enticing and once you start the movie you will know why- the main lead has his reasons, but he is doing things which are not only illegal but also wrong from an ethical perspective. Upon reading a few reviews I noticed this aspect being mentioned in every one of them. Perhaps this is what the director wished would happen- people would discuss the moral aspects of the film and put themselves in the shoes of the characters. Hence, perhaps the question mark at the end of the tag line. He is asking you and you must decide. I shall not spoil anything from the film but I suggest you watch it. Aside from some rash jump cuts and edits this is a great effort on the part of the filmmakers. See more
Anakin S Apr 25, 2019 Chimera Strain got the best sci-fi award in 18 at the Phoenix film festival. I liked the film and for its budget I feel they really got creative and did something spectacular, but the film has some glaring issues. For one the kids didn't look like they belonged to the scientist. I don't want to come across as insensitive, but their accent and diction was way too different. Tolerable as far as kid actors can be, they eat up the screen time. Also, the main villain's motivation wasn't clear (and it still isn't clear to me now). The ending seemed a tad bit rushed. Overall this was a decent film but not the best sci fi film out there. See more
Hagrid G Apr 25, 2019 Awesome film with some great ideas. Henry Cusick plays a scientist, a crazy genius of sorts who decides to cryo-freeze his two children. There are flash forwards and jump cuts, voices in the head and some bizarre mutilation experiments. This is more horror than thriller when you think about it. The genetic modifications bit will also bring in a lot of morality ridden talks and debates. On the visual front you'd be hard pressed to say that this is a low budget film. Although there isn't a lot of variations in the location the look of the scientists' lab, the icy-cool cryo chambers and the effects used for the computers is pretty good. See more
Hermione W Apr 24, 2019 I watched this recently and have to say it mildly surprised me. The acting is good especially from the guy from Lost. Cinematography, although claustrophobic is beautifully photographed. Even the child actors aren't as annoying as they usually are. The technical scientific jargon gets heavy in some places, and to my mild displeasure Ms Quinlan is barely in the film(she was advertised on the posters here) but these are minor issues in the larger scheme- which is that this independent science fiction film has some very interesting ideas, which are relevant today more than ever, and you should give it a shot if you are a fan of this genre. Finn M Apr 23, 2019 The morally bankrupt scientist trope has been played out so many times it is bordering on the clichà (C)(it is not because not many films in this sub-genre are made) so I was expecting something similar in Maurice Haems's Chimera Strain when I saw the trailer. It was a refreshing shock to find that not only does this film turn this clichà (C) on its head, it asks many moral questions to the audience. What would you do in the lead character's place? I will not spoil this film as I'd expect you to be just as surprised as I was. One of the best films in recent years. See more
Kylo R Apr 23, 2019 Chimera Strain is a cautionary tale against the evils of science but one thing it gets right is that it is the people that do wrong and not the science itself. Henry Ian Cusick plays a researcher/scientist who has been having a pretty bad life- his wife lies in a coma, apparently due to a life-threatening disease. Also, the couple's two kids undoubtedly have the same defect, so he decides to cytogenetically freeze them until he can get a strand of a DNA from a jellyfish. The visuals are good, and the direction is nice. Some minor quibbles here and there but for a first-time filmmaker this is a grand effort. Saw it in Dallas, Texas. See more
