Critics Consensus

Children of Men works on every level: as a violent chase thriller, a fantastical cautionary tale, and a sophisticated human drama about societies struggling to live.

Children of Men founders in its latter moments -- not a lot, but enough. Its failure is less one of plot than of something deeper, a composing idea to undergird the plot. Go to Full Review

A film that has much to recommend it, not least the proof it offers, as if any more were needed, that Alfonso Cuarón is one of the most visually inspired directors working today. Go to Full Review

Alfonso Cuaron stages some terrific set-pieces, and the production designers deserve credit for making London in 2027 look like the grunge capital of the world, ie, like now, only more so. One small problem: I didn't believe any of it. Go to Full Review

The acting is exceptional, the cinematography is hauntingly beautiful, and every frame pulls you deeper into its unforgettable dystopian world. Go to Full Review

"Children of Men is a terrifying, exhilarating, and sickening portrait of the darkest corners of humanity, but one that inspires hope all the same." Go to Full Review

Draco S Apr 28, 2019 The few great pieces to this movie were not enough to overcome some cheezy scenes. I really wanted to like this movie :(
Albus L Mar 25, 2019 Alfanzo Cuaron strikes again! Children of men is probably his best movie, to say the least, even if Roma was a masterpiece. The subject matter isn't something anyone can really directly relate to, but Cuaron still uses it to make a message on war. All the acting is great, and damn, there are some pretty breath-taking scenes in this movie. Towards the end, a war has broken out in the city, and hundreds of extras line up to attack each other as the main characters try desperately to escape. I have no idea how Cuaron is able to maintain this crowd, or if he has assistants to help him out, but the extras do an amazing job. Great movie, everyone should see it, it's a little depressing, but is revolutionary for directing. See more
Mar 14, 2019 It is a stupid film. I saw it years ago in the theatre and I thought it was ridiculous then, it is still ridiculous now having just watched it again on MUBI. It is a stupid bloody movie in terms of its concept, plot, sparse dialogue, and poor characterisation. I'm surprised at the high ratings of this movie on some reputable sites, and I've lost faith in those sites on the Web, and the critics andn reviewers. Perhaps the poor concept, sparse dialogue, poor plot points and pseudo thematic element in the film comes from the five or six screenwriters it took to write the thing. Put simply, you could place the philosophical vision of this movie on the head of a sowing needle. See more
Finn P Mar 6, 2019 Wow, what a film. True Cinematic Wizardary.
Theodore R Feb 19, 2019 Children of Men presents a somber future for mankind with stellar performances and even through all its bleakness, is to be considered a shining example of how amazing camerawork can achieve riveting entertainment. See more
Abraham S Feb 18, 2019 Very good, very suspenseful, very interesting. Loved it.
