Critics Consensus

Carlito's Way reunites De Palma and Pacino for a more wistful take on the crime epic, delivering a stylish thriller with a beating heart beneath its pyrotechnic performances and set pieces.

Dreams can die but nightmares can flourish, an understanding brought about by the disillusionment that every De Palma hero experiences.

Penn, in curled hair and wire-rims, makes a brilliant, slippery high-end shyster; his modulated hysteria is amazing. So is Brian De Palma's direction.

The set pieces are among the most thrilling De Palma has ever filmed, while Pacino's restrained performance as the leather-clad, gently lisping Carlito allows plenty of scope for the supporting cast to chew the scenery.

The film proved that the director hadn't lost his touch, despite controversy that he had cast an Italian-American--and not for the first time--as a Latino character. Unsteady accent aside, Pacino's heartfelt performance helped to win over many skeptics

TV, 2019/4/27 It's not so easy to overturn life. His personality also disturbed it. Al pacino still has the power to play a leading role.

VERY Hollywood with a ridiculous drawn-out chase finale and a bullshit drawn-out 'hero death' (which you knew was coming because it was the very first thing you saw in the film!) And it was too long, I was shouting for it all to end for the last 20 minutes. I'm not even sure Pacino was that good.

This was a great experience. Another one where if you want to watch a classic "mob" style movie this is another good one to watch.

A phenomenal suspenseful crime drama. Pacino's accent was at times choppy. Sean Penn's metamorphasis into David Kleinfeld was so deep you forget that its Sean Penn and Penelope Ann Miller's performance as Carlito's long lost love interest completes this cinematic trifecta.
