Eddie Murphy stars in this holiday comedy adventure about a man on a mission to win his neighborhood's annual Christmas home decoration contest. After Chris (Eddie Murphy) inadvertently makes a deal with a mischievous elf named Pepper (Jillian Bell) to better his chances of winning, she casts a magic spell that brings the 12 Days of Christmas to life, and wreaks havoc on the whole town. At the risk of ruining the holidays for his family, Chris, his wife Carol (Tracee Ellis Ross), and their three children must race against the clock to break Pepper's spell, battle deviously magical characters, and save Christmas for everyone.

Critics Consensus

Candy Cane Lane gets credit for its willingness to get weird, but in most other respects, this Eddie Murphy-led holiday comedy is a dead end.

It does stand out in one area, offering more product placement than any movie in recent memory. It's all very sad.

Reginald Hudlin’s film is self-aware, but it’s very broad and in trying to do too much achieves little.

The best scenes have nothing to do with Christmas, such as Chris and Carol expressing their love and support for each other, and the children telling their father that he’s parenting for himself not them.

Candy Cane Lane feels like a film ripped straight out of the late 90s and early 2000s. I should know, because that’s when I was a kid and watched this exact type of bad live-action comedy on repeat and instantly forgot them until my next viewing.

This Christmas comedy is oddly boring and has so many sequences that we could’ve done away with.

Candy Cane Lane lacks emotional resonance, but the simplicity of its message allows it to be solid enough for a Christmas movie.
