What to Know

Critics Consensus

Camp X-Ray's treatment of its subject verges on the shallow, but benefits greatly from a pair of impressive performances from Kristen Stewart and Peyman Moaadi.

The baggage Stewart brings to 'Camp X-Ray' makes its first hour more compelling than anything in the screenplay. Go to Full Review

Camp X-Ray raises quite a few fascinating questions about power, sexism, and war, yet fails to explore them in any real depth. More troubling still, it's a character study that does little in the way of character development. Go to Full Review

It's invigorated, somewhat, by strong central performances from actors on opposite sides of a locked steel door. Go to Full Review

There's no denying, we could use more thought-provoking, if not entirely novel, films like this. Go to Full Review

Notwithstanding good performances, potent imagery and cinematic flair, Camp X-Ray does not cut deep nor surprise. The film stretches some boundaries but breaks none. Go to Full Review

The final 15 minutes betray the first 100, hammering all themes into our skulls. It's an unnecessarily on-the-nose finish to a mostly organic central relationship. Go to Full Review

Theodore L Mar 18, 2019 Kristen Stewart plays guard Amy Cole, a young marine from a small town who joined the military to escape her life. The movie centers around the conflict of her growing relationship with a prisoner, Moaadi, who has been in Gitmo for eight years. This film affected me very deeply in a way I was not expecting. Kristen Stewart and Peyman Moaadi deliver stunning performances which take your breathe away. You really feel for this guy and Stewart has never been more convincing. I thought it would be a stretch to imagine her as a tough soldier and it is kind of surreal yet she manages to create a credible person out of the role. Her emotional distress as the contradictions of her job as camp guard begin to overwhelm her, is very powerful and a pleasure to watch. The independent film is excellent. It is well written and engaging, as well as caries a great story, tone, and pace with it. A a pair of impressive performances from Kristen Stewart and Peyman Moaadi. See more
Anakin G May 4, 2018 Centred upon a sympathetic friendship of a soldier and her detainee, this is one distinguished prison drama that delves profoundly into the emotional complexity of the tragic humanism at the world's most notorious prison, Guantanamo Bay. See more
Albus W Dec 15, 2017 Any close look at Guantanamo Bay, even if fictionalized, is an interesting premise we should be curious about even if we can't be sure of its accuracy. Kristen Stewart's subtle non-verbal acting plays well for a character required to exercise strict military discipline, but compelled by empathy. The relationships appear believable, and Peyman Moaadi performs excellently as a desperate inmate with little-to-no hope of release. Despite his beliefs, he dares reaching out to his captors for some understanding. See more
Han W Sep 7, 2017 I thought I would check it out since it seemed interesting. Was better than that documentary about Abu Ghraib that came out a while back. Overall, not horrible. Just a number of annoying little things that could have been done better. I'd be interested to hear from someone with personal experience with Gitmo though. See more
Han S Aug 13, 2017 Camp X Ray is a very disappointing film that attempts to add a human element into a very serious and controversial topic. The film is not realistic as the female guard would never have been able to have a dialogue in the manner in witch the writer approached. The writer also sends a message that women in the military are soft or perhaps he feels that the nourturing nature of a woman is needed in a cruel and cold military facility which is equally absurd. It's another film that explores the, "what if we could all just be friends" fallacy which stinks of more leftist propaganda for the uneducated. When we consider the harsh realities of war and the psychology, ideology and motivation that drives people to do very bad things in their lives it's troubling to see writers and actors trying to condone and or make a case for why it's ok to do very harmful things and make statements such as this movie attempts to by saying we are all alike. The film was not entertaining, it was not educational or revealing some fantastic new insight that we haven't seen before. It's just male soldiers taking advantage of female subordinates and making the point that terrorists are just people exercising a right of some kind that makes them just like you and me. Very frustrating trying to finish this film. Propaganda film. See more
Luke R Jul 17, 2017 A movie that proves to us that no matter who you are or where you come from, everyone is a human being. Shows us the cruelty that a camp such as Guantanamo deals with. Both protagonists steal the history by making you succumb to the pain both go through. See more
