What to Know

Critics Consensus

Cake finds Jennifer Aniston making the most of an overdue opportunity to test her dramatic chops, but it lacks sufficient depth or warmth to recommend for all but her most ardent fans.

It will be a pity if viewers are too put off by the subject to see Aniston's bravura turn, a tour de force that also tells us something about what we can and can't accept in women's performances, our threshold for unlikability and unprettiness. Go to Full Review

Cake wants to be edgy and genuine, to expose raw and visceral feelings. But it keeps from mining the most searing dramatic soil because, given the nature of the tragedy which it orbits, confronting them head-on may prove uncomfortable to audiences. Go to Full Review

Driven by Aniston's well-judged balance of intensity and restraint, it's an affecting film. Go to Full Review

A great showcase for the new, dramatic Aniston but it isn't a great film. In it's final moments the movie grasps for a feel good ending which is just slightly out of reach. Go to Full Review

Theodore S Mar 28, 2019 This movie was undeniably garbage waste of time. Just utter trash.
Oct 8, 2018 I don't get it. Didn't make any sense. Seemed pretty pointless. It wasn't awful, though.
Hagrid S Sep 15, 2018 A beautiful movie, with an amazing and nuanced performance by Jennifer aniston. No depth or warmth - ridiculous! There is plenty of both - a well-crafted, intimate story. See more
Hermione L Jun 1, 2018 With stars such as Aniston and Kendrick carrying this film, I was really expecting something a bit more. The script is poor, and drags. Aniston's performance convincing enough, but she can't do it all by herself and a lack of plot and supporting characters is what makes Cake, rather painful to watch. See more
Hagrid W Mar 13, 2018 Strengths: Known mostly for picking some bad comedy films, it was interesting to see how Jennifer Aniston (Claire) would handle herself in a dramatic role. She more than delivered. Her pain is clear throughout and she gives everything she has to the role. I appreciate the way the film tackles some of its subject matter. It never veers into preachy territory and treats everything like it matters. There's a sense of authenticity to it all. She does a lot of growing over the course of the movie. Since it doesn't get rushed and she experiences setbacks, the moment where takes the relatively big step and sits upright in the car, it feels earned. I also want to shout out her co-star, Adriana Barraza (Silvana). She was good and had a hilarious rant, completely in Spanish, towards the end. Weaknesses: Aniston and Barraza deliver, but the rest of the cast either feels disappointed or underutilized. The usually terrific Anna Kendrick (Nina) plays the woman who committed suicide. She visits Aniston, either as a ghost or through hallucination, and doesn't really do anything to stand out. Sam Worthington (Roy) is kind of just there, while William H. Macy (Leonard) was basically cast to do one scene. It was distracting to have someone like him in the role. The movie feels long and has several scenes that come across as boring. The script is also lacking in areas that could make this film stick as something completely memorable. Overall: With stronger writing and better pacing, this could've been a sleeper hit. Jennifer Aniston certainly does her best to get the most out of this role and the film. It just misses too many marks. If you like Aniston, it's definitely worth checking out. See more
Anakin G Feb 28, 2018 Quick Summary: A woman tries to understand why a woman in her support group committed suicide, while discovering more about herself along the way. His and Her Consensus Why you might want to watch it: You like Jennifer Aniston but have always wanted to see her more dramatic chops You don't mind (or even prefer) movies that tackle tougher subject matter- in this case, suicide You're down with movies that don't have to spell everything out and leave some things up to your interpretation Skip if: You tend to shy away from tougher themes and are looking for a happier movie tonight A brief sex scene, no nudity Recommend: Our favorite part of this film is how it tries (and mostly succeeds) in tackling a subject often shied away from in more broad reaching cinema. Jennifer Aniston's character contemplates why a friend of hers committed suicide. The best part is not everything is just laid out up front or spelled out in annoying voice over monologue. You're left to discover much of what's in her mind and why she's doing what she's doing. Aniston does a fine job here, different than what we've seen elsewhere from her. So if you're up from some deeper stuff tonight, here's a worthwhile offering. See more
