A coming-of-age comedy follows the life of Jimmy Livingston (Jake Gyllenhaal), a young man born without immunities and raised in a manufactured world provided by his well-intentioned, but misguided mother (Swoosie Kurtz). But when he realizes that he's in love with Chloe (Marley Shelton), the girl next door, he has no choice but to build a mobile bubble suit, and set off across the country to Niagara Falls, to stop Chloe's wedding -- which is only seven days away -- in time to confess his love.

Critics Consensus

Bubble Boy bounces along with lame, offensive jokes that are more tasteless than funny.

Hayes shows a deft touch with both cartoony slapstick and character-based comedy and manages to create moments of real poignancy in between. Go to Full Review

The road trip aspect of Bubble Boy provides fodder for most of the jokes, which are requisitely crude and tactless and only occasionally amusing. Go to Full Review

Seldom has a more misguided movie escaped from a major studio than Touchstone's Bubble Boy. Go to Full Review

Draco W Dec 29, 2018 Good stuff. Gyllenhaal is the most attractive man I can imagine, and seeing him in this context is hilarious. I liked this movie when it came out, and since then I have grown to love him in a handful of serious roles, so this was a fun thing to revisit. My uncle gave me a scratched copy of this from blockbuster when I was a kid, and I still have it now in my late 20s. This movie is just FUN, and the cameos are pretty great. Underrated. Nearly twenty years later, it holds up. See more
Albus S Dec 16, 2018 Is it terrible? Yes. Will i watch it again? Yes. It's so bad but somehow i love it. I love how this came out the same year as my all time favorite Jake Gyllenhaal movie, and is a total disaster compared to it. See more
Finn W Feb 9, 2010 *1/2 (out of four) A sad waste of time and an offensively inept comedy about a young man (Jake Gyllenhaal) who has an immune defeciency which doesn't allow him to be exposed to germs. He falls for his next door neighbor (Marly Shelton). When she leaves for Niagara Falls to get married, the "Bubble Boy" buils a round bubble in order to travel the distance to stop the married. The script tries too hard to keep things light while failing to breath life into any of its characters. See more
