What to Know

Critics Consensus

Crude and offensive, but with ample cultural insights and gut-busting laughs, Bruno is another outlandish and entertaining mockumentary from Sacha Baron Cohen.

Well, when it's funny, it is funny, but it is only intermittently funny... What I'm saying, I think, is that the joke has worn thin. Go to Full Review

Baron Cohen is, without doubt, the ballsiest comic of his generation-and one of the brightest. But it's hard to imagine him taking the guerrilla shock tactics of Borat and Brüno any further. Go to Full Review

I don't know if there are any comedians working today as fully dedicated to a joke as Sacha Baron Cohen. Go to Full Review

Funny how Brüno, the latest cinematic incarnation inspired by a character from Sacha Baron Cohen’s Da Ali G Show, proves to be daring, topical, and so revealing about American society, while also being so crude, outrageous, and shocking. Go to Full Review

Rey R Apr 16, 2019 Hilarious. I was laughing through the whole movie
Luke W Mar 10, 2019 Bruno is very short and it can get repetitive in its structure, but it's hugely entertaining throughout and funny from beginning to end. I liked the brutal parts, but the most hilarious scenes here are those awkward, cringy situations, particularly towards the end. Sasha Baron Cohen's mannerisms, facial expressions and line delivery are all fantastic leading to such a fun creation. The movie is insensitive and politically incorrect and thus all the funnier for it. See more
Feb 15, 2019 Bruno has the type of shock humor that is absolutely terrific. Many people try to compare this movie to Borat, but though both leads are played by the same actor the humor and tone is completely different. The movie gets your attention immediately and just wont let you go. Bruno exposes the truth of stereotypes of the LGBTQ+ community, particularly gay men and exploits it to create a cinematic masterpiece. Though some scenes may be graphic or 'shocking' they do it with intent, making you question your morals and beliefs. Some people really don't this movie a.) Becuase of their person prejudice or b.) They find it offensive. This shock humor is made to be crazed and dramatic, and the way this movie presents it is done to make you reflect on what the people with in the movie are saying. I personally adored this movie, and despite the minor kinks here and there it is overall incredibly humorous and thought provoking. See more
Theodore R Aug 24, 2018 While this movie is hilarious at times and generally a good movie, it cannot beat Borat, feels a little laggy sometimes, and I wasn't a big fan of the meatspin and fire extinguisher scenes. It's quite a decent movie. I recommend it to crass comedy fans and those who like other Sacha Baron Cohen movies should try it. See more
Hagrid P Dec 21, 2017 Bruno is directed by Larry Charles, and it stars Sacha Baron Cohen in a mockumentary comedy film about a gay Austrian fashion journalist that was fired from his own television show, and Bruno (Sacha Baron Cohen) has an idea that to be famous, he wants to be an actor. I've been wanting to see this after watching Borat, which I thought was funny, but not as highly praised worthy as I thought was going to be. It took such a long time to actually get in hold of this movie, and it was because DirecTV was showing this in one of the channels. So when I managed to watch this, I can say that in my opinion, Bruno is better than Borat. Sacha Baron Cohen does a fantastic job of looking and acting so much different as Bruno from Borat that I can totally see the people that Bruno talks to be completely fooled by him. The humor in this is hysterical to watch, and is more offensive and outrageous than Borat, but never was the point where it was doing it just because. The movie has a lot of insights of the fashion aspect and being gay as it's interesting to see that, and it definitely was during the time where being gay wasn't quite ok from the majority of the people. I was surprised at how graphic this is, and it shows how fearless Sacha Baron Cohen is when saying and doing a lot of stuff that is way out there that is definitely not for everybody. There were times where I was shocked, but always laughing when it does go to the extreme. The only issue I have with this is that by the end of it, it starts to make me laugh less. Bruno is a really great film that I'll watch this over Borat, even though it has to be by myself as it'll be very awkward watching this with people. See more
Albus M Oct 18, 2017 That DVD was found in a dvd player I bought used. Crude mockumentary for sure with a lot of known people either playing along or getting had by Sacha. We get to see a lot of reactions to homer-sexual like behavior or innuendoes. It's incredible how some people can put up with lots of outrageous things. The cherry in this, and we see quickly why the ring was surrounded by high barbed wired fence, is the phoney fight that turns almost homer-sexual porno. The hetero crowd was in shock, and rightly so! Haha! Surprising no one was punching him in the face. Must be the cameras... The film is sometimes hilarious and sometimes pukative and I can hardly imagine how the pukative bits could actually be turns on for some people. No wonder that was illegal! See more
