Critics Consensus

Carrey is hilarious in the slapstick scenes, but Bruce Almighty gets bogged down in treacle.

Alexander Walker London Evening Standard Jan 9, 2018
As entertainment, it gives good value: it's light, quick and diverting. Morgan Freeman, predictably, gives it heart, gravitas and the appearance of wisdom; but it's Carrey who keeps all the balls in the air with refined mania. Go to Full Review

There are enough goofball touches in Bruce Almighty to carry the movie to a certain extent... However, when the time comes for Bruce to "share and learn", the effect is trite and embarrassing. Go to Full Review

Happily deranged comedy has typical Carrey humor. Go to Full Review

It's a nice return to comedy for Carrey. Go to Full Review

While Carrey's antics are good for some laughs, the film ultimately falls apart, thanks to a heavy-handed screenplay with enough sugar and sweetness to induce a diabetic coma. Go to Full Review

Although Carrey's built-in audience base will undoubtedly be thanking The Almighty this weekend for Bruce Almighty, with so many other films out there right now, this one can be put on the back burner. Go to Full Review

Albus G Jan 21, 2019 Jim Carrey, Morgan Freeman, Steve Carell, and a pretty damn good movie. Original Idea and Great Execution. Jim Carrey was very funny along with Steve Carell and they made a Dynamic Duo. The way Bruce Nolan (Jim Carrey) uses his powers make it a very entertaining flick to watch. I also think it's worth noting that Morgan Freeman was a great choice for god and fit the role perfectly. Everything is just presented in a really funny, good, and entertaining way. I really think you should watch this if you haven't already. And that's the way the cookie crumbles See more
Poe S Jan 3, 2019 While there's one noticeable plot hole and the cinematography isn't anything to be impressed with, the rest is a fun feature. The actors all give entertaining performances, the comedy is funny and the writing behind it not only gives some good laughs, but also has a message about taking on life and what do to about it. Hagrid G Dec 27, 2018 I did not expect it to be good
Abraham M Dec 21, 2018 Why did I hate this movie? Because it insults intelligence. Had Bruce Almighty been content to follow the well-trodden path of mindless comedies, it might have worked. After all, the scene in which Bruce embarrasses a TV anchor is genuinely funny. But director Tom Shadyac can't resist slipping into Patch Adams mode. The result is a painful final act in which Bruce learns the hard lesson that the greatest power of all is to help others. Also considering what Bruce does with God's powers, he must have an I.Q. of about 10. About a hundred good plots could have been written with this backstory â" anything from a straight comedy to a tragedy, with various stops in between â" but Bruce Almighty misses them all. What does Bruce do with his great powers? Use a gust of wind to flip up a woman's skirt, pull the moon closer to Earth, and move aside traffic. No stopping time. No visiting other planets. The gag of Bruce doing silly little things with his powers is amusing for about 60 seconds, then it loses its appeal. See more
George S Nov 10, 2018 This film was almost good.
Rey P Nov 4, 2018 an enjoyable comedy with a good basis, but in itself creates an unlikeable protagonist and disappointing ending.
