Kenai is a young Indian brave with a particular distaste for bears. When his brother Sitka is killed by one, Kenai in turn kills the bear, only to be magically transformed into one himself. To make matters worse, his other brother Denahi vows to kill the bear Kenai has become. Kenai's only hope is a magical mountain where he believes he can be changed back to a human, and he enlists a real bear cub, Koda, to get him there.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Brother Bear is gentle and pleasant if unremarkable Disney fare, with so-so animation and generic plotting.

Disney hides the morality tale behind a rip-roaring soundtrack, goofy moose sidekicks and enough bear slapstick to delight any child. Go to Full Review

While the animation itself (from the same team as Mulan) is charming and at times beautiful, the script is banal and uninspired. Go to Full Review

While the film can definitely be annoying in its comedy and have some misses such as the soundtrack, the emotional core of the film is still wildly strong with a moving and mature conversation that is honestly one of Disney's best. Go to Full Review

A succession of sequences already seen many times before that turn the film into a predictable trance. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Rough rule of thumb: the more an animated movie drones on about the Great Spirit, the less likely it is to have any great spirit. Go to Full Review

Mar 24, 2019 I personally enjoyed this film while growing up. The characters are like able, the story is good, and good songs. It does have some flaws though, when Knai confesses to Koda with Phil Collins singing over the scene, and some predictable moments, but I still enjoy it to this day. See more

George S Jan 5, 2019 Brother Bear has good animation with a notable breathtaking visual sequence within the 20-minute mark, lovely Phil Collins songs, good voice acting and an enjoyable sense of adventure. However, the story is generic, there's a VERY notable Narm-y scene in which potentially powerful voice acting is drowned out by a Phil Collins song, it may or may not come off as a twist regarding one's mother's fate (gee, I wonder what could've happened her in this DISNEY ANIMATED MOVIE), I found the Canadian moose brothers to be intolerable and the middle's more modern talk may put off viewers. They don't make pop culture references but they pinky promises and playing I Spy come off as too out of place when you consider the more timeless way in which the movie begins. I don't hate Brother Bear, I just think that it was at the wrong place at the wrong time. See more
