It's a disarmingly lovely, big-hearted film, and hilarious in places. Go to Full Review

Even the inevitable flaws of the low-budget production are winning, showcasing as they do the narrative artistry that makes Boy so distinctive amid current factory-written studio productions. Go to Full Review

A simple story of coming of age and the bitter failings of hero worship that succeeds thanks to the impressive skills of its young star. Go to Full Review

As with all great comedy, there's some sadness and grit at its core that grounds the laughs in a relatable drama. Go to Full Review

A beautiful, heart-warming film that will be relatable to teens and will remind anyone older of a time when they too were trying to make sense of the world. Go to Full Review

Finn R Apr 14, 2019 A film with a lot of heart and simultaneous heartbreak. The year is 1984, and on the rural East Coast of New Zealand "Thriller" is changing kids' lives. Inspired by the Oscar nominated Two Cars, One Night, Boy is the hilarious and heartfelt coming-of-age tale about heroes, magic and Michael Jackson. Boy is a dreamer who loves Michael Jackson. He lives with his brother Rocky, a tribe of deserted cousins and his Nan. Boy's other hero, his father, Alamein, is the subject of Boy's fantasies, and he imagines him as a deep sea diver, war hero and a close relation of Michael Jackson (he can even dance like him). In reality he's "in the can for robbery". When Alamein returns home after 7 years away, Boy is forced to confront the man he thought he remembered, find his own potential and learn to get along without the hero he had been hoping for. Taika Waititi hasn't failed to impress me thus far. I first caught whiff of his name from "Thor Ragnarok", however, this was a much better film under his resume for a variety of reasons. It's a story with some really powerful themes about this love from a boy to his Father, and the ultimate downfalls of a lackluster parent. It's something that really hits home and I know some people can relate to it even more than I can. It makes for a story worth telling and one people should watch. First off, Taika is a hilarious guy. He's a smart writer but he's also a solid actor. He's got this really specific, awkward sense of humor that works so well. It's not filled with corny jokes, but it's situationaly a dark comedy. It's simultaneously filled with enough drama to keep it interested, giving us a hybrid blend of multiple genres that mash well together. James Rolleston killed it. It's always a necessity to give major props to a child actor that carries himself / herself well. He had an amazing personality (character-wise) and his chemistry with Taika made for a believable Father-Son relationship. The performances all around were great. This is a small film, so I don't expect many people at all to watch it. In fact, I hadn't even known about it until it was showed to me. But "Boy" is a great and charming film that'll warm your heart and break it all at once. See more
Hermione R Nov 12, 2018 Sadly, not enough people know about this film. One of Taika Waititi's earliest films delivers quirky off-beat humor, genuinely dramatic and heartbreaking moments, and an overall entertaining story. "Boy" is well worth a viewing. See more
Finn S Sep 23, 2018 Quirky humor in the Napoleon Dynamite genre that was entertaining, but not quite as endearing.
Rey M Aug 29, 2018 Good film set in New Zealand
Luke R Jul 23, 2018 Shiftless people aren't ones you want to idolize. They have problems, but they don't want to face them by either blaming others for their problems, or retreating into a fantasy world where the problems don't exist. We see examples of both in Boy, a charming story of Boy who has to deal with loving the man-child father he never knew. With the right mix of irreverence and heart that Waititi is now known for, the movie's simplicity works as a fun coming-of-age tale. See more
Ron W May 18, 2018 Amazing film! Pulls on all the right strings, keeping you emotionally and comically entertained the whole way through! Taika Waititi and James Rolleston deliver heartbreakingly honest performances as a father and son in turmoil in a distinctly Waititi fashion! See more
