Critics Consensus

Boundaries benefits from a stellar performance by the reliably excellent Christopher Plummer, but his work is overwhelmed by the mediocre movie that surrounds it.

Andrea Gronvall Chicago Reader Mar 4, 2020
The father's chicanery is the brightest spot in a screenplay that makes the heroine a shrill stooge for everyone else's agenda as the protagonists bicker their way to self-discovery and mutual regard. Go to Full Review

Boundaries keeps the syrup on medium, and Plummer looks like he's having a ball. If you have a penchant for broken wing syndrome, you may want to let this one into your life. Go to Full Review

A movie with no reason to exist apart from setting into motion an otherwise interesting cast, led by Christopher Plummer and Vera Farmiga. Go to Full Review

Even before Boundaries' tired plot grinds into motion, your patience may already be worn thin by the introduction of only the first of its many grating characters. Go to Full Review

Boundaries may not exactly cross any new ones. Yet, it still works as a piece of heartfelt escapism thanks to its simplistic storyline. Go to Full Review

It isn't that Boundaries is a long movie, not at all. It's that every moment feels like a quirky, twee cliché, straining so hard to be cute and never feeling remotely authentic. Go to Full Review

Finn G Mar 19, 2019 did anyone really see this? GREAT MOVIE !!
Rey W Jan 15, 2019 Road movie as family therapy: already seen too many times and in much more convincing forms. (Mauro Lanari)
Draco R Oct 28, 2018 This just didn't work at all. This is one of Vera Farmiga's worst movies and performances. Long intervals of boredom along with poor dialogue, misjudged sequences. This movie had no chance really with this script. Its content is just to unrealistic. An 85 year old drug dealer (Plummer) , a ranty Vera who drifted into dire rant monologues along the way about her childhood, and the oddball but intelligent son basically take a road trip from Plummer's old folks home to Farmiga home and various characters (Peter Fonda, Christopher Lloyd) they meet along the way. That's it. Wasn't funny. Only Plummer gains any credit. As bad as it gets. This typifies how silly it was. After completing the journey home with Plummer, within minutes of meeting the sister, the sisters are doing a forced karaoke version of "Gloria" by Laura Branigan, which was ridiculous. See more
Draco R Oct 18, 2018 The performances here are played with candid honesty, without withholding the viewer of sappy emotional moments, that do occur but play for better effect with a story that surrounds it. See more
Ron W Aug 29, 2018 It's ok. Right now, however, amidst a dreary landscape of scandals, it's really good.
Aug 9, 2018 Wonderful ageist movie-making. My gerontologist agrees.
