Blue Ruin

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Smart, stripped-down, and thrillingly grim, Blue Ruin proves that a well-told revenge story can still leave its audience on the edge of their seat.

The world doesn't need another empty genre exercise. But as Blue Ruin reminds us, it can always use more filmmakers of Saulnier's resourcefulness, sensitivity and quiet assurance. Go to Full Review

With the same brand of realist irony the Coens used to cool down Blood Simple, writer-director Jeremy Saulnier slows the genre's heartbeat to gripping effect. Go to Full Review

Blue Ruin starts promisingly with a hairy hobo living in a blue, rusty, bullet-holed Pontiac on a Delaware beach. Go to Full Review

Revenge narratives are a dime a dozen but when storytellers are able to really get to the root of why these archetypal tales are so compelling, as Saulnier is able to do here, they strike a collective nerve. Go to Full Review

Leia W Mar 16, 2019 7.3/10 -(Seen on 3/16/19)
Hagrid S Jan 4, 2019 Downright nasty and mean to the bitter end.
Albus M Nov 24, 2018 Saulnier has once again proven himself to be an immensely talented director that has a particular skill for recounting the sudden and abrupt nature of violence in human existence. Perhaps not his strongest work, but it still stands as being a singularly unique story told from an odd perspective. See more
Kylo L Oct 3, 2018 You never really know where Blue Ruin is going, what makes the movie very refreshing in a played out genre. Dwight is no superhero and every hit he takes influences the course of the story. See more
Rey W Sep 15, 2018 A slow burn that frustrates at times, but due to the decent plot its bearable. Its definitely not a horror.
Theodore S Aug 18, 2018 This is the most real film I have ever watched. Minimalist and dark, Blue Ruin takes you to the cleaners. You do not want to skip this film. See more
