What to Know

Critics Consensus

Blackthorn invites comparisons to a classic Western -- and survives, thanks largely to a charismatic performance by a well-chosen Sam Shepard.

This story, parboiled out of one of the most memorable Westerns, is supported all the way by Gil's directing. Go to Full Review

Blackthorn is a handsomely mounted film, with many an awesome vista and rolling plain, but compared to the quicksilver brilliance of its predecessors, it comes off as irredeemably minor. Go to Full Review

It feels as unique as the way the ageing Shepard's eyes appear weirdly independent of the rest of him. He's a bird of prey gazing through the holes in a crumbling wall. Go to Full Review

The film is worth seeking out for Shepard and Rea’s performances. Go to Full Review

It is an enjoyable western set within a non-traditional location that helps breathe new life into a genre that's long been on life support. Go to Full Review

While the Bolivian landscape is certainly a sight to behold, Blackthorn feels like a cheap attempt at invigorating interest by exploiting a classic film character. Go to Full Review

Luke G May 20, 2018 Sam Shepard is excellent in this fictional western directed by Mateo Gil.
Han R Jan 18, 2017 I'm not sure that I could fully appreciate this movie since I'm not a big Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid fan, and have only seen that classic film once. But I definitely appreciated the incredible cinematography and production design of this modern western. And I loved Sam Shepard's performance. I just didn't feel like there was much of a story that meant much of anything. The movie just kind of meanders through a few days over a few miles and then ends. I may revisit this one again down the road and see if something more comes to me from it. See more
Ron R Oct 7, 2011 Although Shepard is perfectly cast as a world-weary outlaw reluctantly drawn into one more adventure, the movie doesn't quite justify the resuscitation of classic film characters for another outing. See more
