In the wake of their father's mysterious disappearance, two estranged brothers -- responsible Gordon and reckless John -- reunite to sift through the contents of his stubbornly anachronistic VHS rental store. Among the inventory, they discover an interactive VCR board game, which their father viewed just before he vanished. Intrigued, the boys pop in the tape, press play and soon discover that, far from an ordinary game, the video is a portal to a nightmarish alternate reality.

Poe M Feb 15, 2019 You know before watching Sequence Break I really had no idea who Chase Williamson was. Since then I have stumbled upon him in multiple movies that I watched on a whim. Well, them and Victor Crowley. I think he is becoming that one actor that I know of and don't mind, yet never really like any of his work. Case in point...Beyond The Gates. I can get behind any movie that wants to horror homage to the type of board game that was really never very good. The VCR boardgame. So, having Beyond The Gates be a lost and evil VHS game had me intrigued. I was still intrigued as I met the characters, and watched them wander about droning out their dialogue. In fact, there was a point where Margot the lady character talks about being on Ambien, and I figured the whole cast was on it, considering the way they delivered their lines. Anyways, I was still intrigued. Then minutes turned into hours, hours to days, and finally, they played the board game. Sadly, by this point, I was pretty bored and no longer intrigued by the concept. I understand that they had a low budget, and it was maybe meant to be a slow burn, but everything that wasn't the game was so dull and monotonous. By the time it started to get interesting I was checked out. The games parts are fun though, and they show some creative gore, mixed with some jump scares. Although they get up and wander away from the board game more then they do in Jumanji. Can't finish the game if you don't play. Oh wait, they're padding the run time. The generic ending is one of the worst parts. It makes the game they played have less impact as noting of note really happens. It just ends. I don't know. I am still torn about recommending this one. I think I will because I tend to be grumpier when it comes to newer indie horror films, and Beyond The Gates has some good stuff in it. But, I personally found it a bit too dull to enjoy. See more
Anakin M Nov 23, 2018 I have never posted a movie review to any website yet. This movie has made me completely ditch rotten tomoatoes a movie review rating to go off. Fix this rating rotten or your site is completely useless and broken, just like this movie. See more
Luke S Jul 18, 2018 Decent little horror flick that combines a little bit of Jumanji with an homage to 80s horror / VHS horror. A couple of well-done gore scenes but it never reaches the heights of the films to which it pays homage. Nothing special, but an enjoyable diversion. See more
Draco R Jul 7, 2018 The film is an indie love affair with VHS 80's horror. With atmospheric synth music, dressed down sets and a kitchy straight from Full Moon Horror tale, "Beyond The Gates" is anot instant cult classic. The story is pretty basic and definitely classic. The characters are recognizable tropes found throughout 80's genre films, such as "The Gates" and "Night Of The Demons". At times the characters feel slightly two-dimensional and moments fall a bit flat, but never to a level that drops the energy of the story. An even-keeled balance and steady rise to the climax is maintained nicely right up to the horror popcorn thrills. Even the "sun shines down on all" ending scene comes of more sweet than cheesy. The special effects in "Beyond The Gates" are great. The practical effects are visceral, on screen goodies than work perfectly. The spooky atmospheric and supernatural elements are totally 80's fun. Overall this is a nicely made, slice of indie cult delight. One for the collection. See more
Draco R May 6, 2018 One of the slowest first acts possibly ever. But it turns out for a reason - the final act is a deliciously earned gore-filled delight. Dig the vhs nostalgia too. Acting is unremarkable. See more
Luke M Apr 22, 2018 Silly story, silly script, bland acting. An utter disappointment.
