When he was young, Howard Phillips (Jason Barry) watched his sister get torn apart by one of Dr. Herbert West's (Jeffrey Combs) reanimated corpses. Phillips, now a doctor, is so eager to learn more about the mad doctor's attempts to bring back the dead that he accepts a position at the prison where West is being held. Phillips delves further into West's gruesome research, which attracts the attention of a local reporter (Elsa Pataky) and the cruel prison warden (Simón Andreu).

Critics Consensus

Beyond Re-Animator substitutes relentless gore and juvenile shock for genuine tension, offering sporadic visual inventiveness and campy black comedy but largely collapsing into queasy spectacle with little substance.

The plenty of guts and goo to keep lovers of the splatter-fest genre entertained, though less in the way of dramatic tension.

There's less hore than previous films but more cheese, plus some devilish black humour.

A lengthy final sequence shows Yuzna can still turn up witty visual novelties in a genre he helped to invent, and his hearty commitment to such nonsense makes the slickly produced pic engaging.

This is not a giant of a film, but has enough going on that it doesn’t disgrace the Re-Animator name while throwing in enough new (often literal) gags to carry it along.
