Bernie lacks the edge of malice one might reasonably expect from so nasty a tale. Go to Full Review

But the troubling question at the heart of this liberating, sunlit, deceptively simple but extremely complex and fairly formidable film is: should the law or the community itself decide the fate of its citizens? Go to Full Review

Bernie sits squarely in the middle of Linklater’s indie-mainstream spectrum – an experiment in marrying drama and documentary, which inevitably satisfies neither. Go to Full Review

While some may bridle at a serious event being treated in a glib fashion for comic effect, Linklater never openly ridicules the situation or his subjects – and serial-mugger Black is remarkably restrained. Go to Full Review

Apr 7, 2019 Great movie. Very funny and really cute. Jack Black does a great job. McConahay is hilarious! One of my favorite movies.
Leia R Jan 27, 2019 Linklater excels the shocking true scandal of Bernie Teide with a psychological human study that a film could only impeccably delivers on a lesser hand besides the little dark comedic energy being shadowed by the faithful docudrama craftsmanship, thoroughly-pointed courtroom argument regarding the case, and Black's effective performance. Luke S Dec 6, 2018 I've never seen Jack Black like this. He plays a effete Texan undertaker who seduces and murders a wealthy elderly woman. But it's more complicated than that. For one thing, the woman in question is the nightmare of the town who traps him into becoming her servant and he is personally so beloved that his fellow townspeople refuse to convict him even despite his confession. What's great about this film is just how likable the murderer is and how unlikable those seeking to bring him to justice are. It never justifies his crime or covers up some of his less savory behavior, but it also seems so completely out of character for him that you can sympathize with the loss of control. But should you? The whole film delights in flipping questions like that around. It was clearly wrong for him to continue to spend her money, but does that make it right for the government to repossess and definance half the community (most of her stolen money was spent on gifts and other donations)? It certainly doesn't seem to justify seizing the money spent before her murder. See more
Han G Sep 20, 2018 True crime, character study, where an amazing Jack Black gives all he has.
Jun 18, 2018 Jack Black stars in this immensely dark comedy of a funeral director, Bernie Tiede, in rural Texas loved by the entire community. He befriends a universally despised, but very rich, widow played by Shirley MacLaine. Their odd closeness has destructive results at the hands of the kind and selfless funeral director. The story gets darker as the collective intellect of the small town feels more sympathy toward Black's murderous character than his victim. The genius of this film is the abundance of locals and their single-camera, documentary-style explanations of the events leading up to Bernie's trial. The movie drags a little longer than it needs to, but is very well-written with entertaining, though not very unique, performances by Black, who channels about every other character he's ever played, albeit with a toned-down "Jack Black," and Matthew McConaughey, who channels his inner Texan with shades of his character from Tropic Thunder. Be sure to stay through all of the credits though as the locals have much more to say... See more
Theodore S Jan 18, 2018 It's unusual, unsuspecting, richly woven , carefully knitted, and hand crafted behind the scenes type feel is one of a kind.
