Ben-Hur

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Colossal in scope without ever losing its delicate spiritual thread, Ben-Hur is a culmination of biblical epics that strikes an ideal balance between awesome scale and raw humanity.

It is much more than mere spectacle. It is a picture that has warmth and romance, excitement, drama, tragedy, humor and inspiration blended into one absorbing drama. Go to Full Review

MGM has delivered the Ben-Hur it promised. It is, whatever the minor pros and cons that will rage over it, magnificent, inspiring, awesome, enthralling and all the other adjectives you have been reading about it. Go to Full Review
Mildred Martin Philadelphia Inquirer Jun 17, 2026
This is a Ben-Hur to stir the imagination and move the heart. It has spectacle, of course. But it is spectacle which, exciting beyond words in the stunningly handled chariot race, does not overwhelm the basic truths of Wallace's story of faith. Go to Full Review

The last gasp of a dying Hollywood, Ben-Hur doesn't have the substance to fill its epic size. Go to Full Review

Perhaps the perfect picture has not yet been filmed -- any more than the perfect novel has been written or the perfect painting yet put on canvas -- but Ben-Hur will do, and will do for a long time, too. Go to Full Review

The chariot race has all the impact and terror that one could imagine. For minute after minute it holds the viewer in almost sinister fascination. Go to Full Review

Rey M Apr 14, 2019 Just left the theater watched the 60th anniversary edition. Better than ever!
Poe R Mar 31, 2019 One of the greatest movies ever made.
Han L Feb 25, 2019 Worth seeing, but not worth going out of your way to see. Jointly written by 6 writers, all of whom appear to have differing views about the direction of the film's plot, which is over-piously and mock reverentially weaves around the backdrop of Christ's life, and includes a splendid chariot race, a naval battle apparently filmed in a bathtub, three Moaning Jewish Mothers ( and not for comic relief, alas), and a curious couple of dollops of patent homoeroticism, and a predilection for repeating the obvious, in the manner of a keen young curate giving his first lengthy sermon to a collection of bored schoolboys. Finlay Currie and Sam Jaffe hijack the picture from under Charlton Heston's very fine nose ( and he doesn't seem to care), and the purported attraction between Heston and Esther, his romantic pairing is non-existent. The historical details recorded have not been checked; the Star of David was not emblematic at the time, nor the presence of a Mezuzah on Ben-Hur's house. Summation ? well meaning and dull, and very far from the 'masterpiece' Hollywood would have you believe you are watching. See more
Luke M Feb 18, 2019 Ben-Hur (1959) A story of Christ: One of Hollywood's greatest Epics . Record-breaking winner of 11 Oscars, including Best Picture, Director, Actor, Supporting Actor, and Score, this epic masterpiece stars Charlton Heston ("The Ten Commandments," "Touch of Evil") in the title role of a rebellious Israelite Jew who takes on the Roman Empire during the time of Christ. Featuring one of the most famous action sequences of all time -- the breathtaking chariot race. Directed by Oscar-winner William Wyler ("Mrs. Miniver," "The Best Years of Our Lives"). Recently selected as one of the top 100 American films of all time by the prestigious American Film Institute. Human Drama, Grand Spectacle, Moving Divinity. Ben-Hur has many of my favorite actors of all time . Namely Charlton Heston,Cathy O'Donnell The Best Years of Our Lives (1946), They Live by Night (1948). William Wyler's Ben-Hur is one of the greatest epics in cinematic history. The film changed the medium forever and is a stunning accomplishment in film. Ben-Hur is a masterful piece of cinema that combines action and drama. The performances delivered by the actors are flawless and the film is powerful, exciting and of course epic in scope. Ben-Hur has some of the most iconic scenes ever put on film. Most notably the chariot race, which is a behemoth of excitement and superbly well staged, and is one of the most iconic scenes in Ben-Hur, not to mention in cinematic history. Ben-Hur is a film that is grand, epic and too big for words. This is an exciting, well acted film. Though Ben-Hur has some religious overtones, it doesn't overdo it, and it manages to be fairly limited in its content. The film is a standout piece of cinema that blends drama and action beautifully and will satisfy people who enjoy grand cinematic epics. Ben-Hur remains the film of which all grand sword and sandal epics are judged upon. With a great cast, a majestic score, stellar action and dramatic sequences, Ben-Hur's place in the cinematic medium is assured. Ben-Hur still ranks among Hollywood's finest examples of pure entertainment. Ben-Hur still ranks among Hollywood's finest examples of pure entertainment. See more
Jan 26, 2019 The best, GREATEST thrilling and inspiring epic movie ever made! With the best movie character ever portrayed: Charlton Heston as Judah Ben-Hur! And the best movie score ever composed! See more
Jan 14, 2019 The long run time attests to both the huge budget and poor directing. A movie celebrated for its scale is really just remembered for one unnecessarily long chariot scene and the fact that grandparents everywhere like to repeat Charlton Heston's name while rambling about the good ol days See more
