While wandering the streets, he encounters business mogul Ben Rand (Melvyn Douglas), who assumes Chance to be a fellow upper-class gentleman. Soon Chance is ushered into high society, and his unaffected gardening wisdom makes him the talk of the town.

Critics Consensus

Smart, sophisticated, and refreshingly subtle, Being There soars behind sensitive direction from Hal Ashby and a stellar Peter Sellers performance.

Under the direction of Hal Ashby, in his first film since Coming Home, Sellers gives an impressively disciplined performance, always taut and under control. The difficulty with the film, however, is that the screenplay is basically a one-joke story. Go to Full Review

Gently directed by Hal Ashby, this satire of a ruling class in which nobody knows anything is almost plausible, and certainly topical. Go to Full Review

The result must be one of the boldest of commercial comedies, for the way it turns on passages of dead time, the dreadful pauses while other characters struggle to see the significance in each of Chance's cryptically meaningless remarks. Go to Full Review

Peter Sellers gives a masterful, stripped-back performance in this memorable satire. Go to Full Review

…a final flourish of comic genius from Peter Sellers…still an extraordinary film by Hal Ashby, stripping back layers of modern pretensions and viewing a chaotic world with a child’s innocence and insight…’ Go to Full Review

Decades later, Being There endures not just for Sellers’ quietly brilliant performance, but as a sharp, prescient satire of celebrity, media, and political obsession—a comedy that feels as timely today as it did in 1979. Go to Full Review

Harry G Apr 15, 2019 Peter Sellers lost the Oscar because the entire mood of the movie was lost when director Hal Ashby inserted the spoof (goof) reel three seconds into the closing credits -- before you had a chance to fully absorb the uniqueness of the film and while the "feeling" the film cast lie all around you. Suddenly, you were jolted into a ridiculous reality, quite out of line with the film. This was Sellers' best work and the entire cast deserved credit for a job well done. The book and screenwriters laid a perfect foundation and everything came together, which is a rare happening. "Being There" deserved best picture of the year and Sellers deserved best actor for a role superbly played in a film superbly done. He knew this was the defining moment of his life -- he had waited patiently for it -- and he delivered. See more
Harry S Jan 8, 2019 What a great movie. Almost 5/5. Really worth a watch and then subsequent research to learn the things you might not have picked up on during the viewing. See more
Albus G Aug 17, 2018 With an innocence that dominates the picture, Peter Sellers' lead performance, as well as the story's subtle mystery over who his character is, this quiet dramedy has a pace that's almost therapeutic, if occasionally awkward. See more
Theodore G Aug 17, 2018 Strange , brilliant,smart.
Hagrid S Aug 13, 2018 This movie was worth creating a Rotten Tomatoes account just to review it. I had added it to my list as I had heard so many people comparing Donald Trump to Chance (Chauncy Gardner), and perhaps the comparison reaches as far as their acolytes. That being said, all people who rise to some level of notoriety owe at least some of it too being in the right place and the right time and fitting well in to a niche. See more
Anakin S Jul 15, 2018 The ending of this film is the most satisfying, loving and ass kicking of all. Let us back up now...it is all about the character "Chance/Chauncey" played by the nonpareil Peter Sellers. The story revolves around Sellers character as a naive and even moron man who finds himself adored for his intelligence. Through the course of the film we see how he becomes a national treasure. This is a Forrest Gump wanna be film, played with expertise by Sellers. The acting is superb, the story is superb, the ending, that makes you fill in the blanks, yet, is ambiguous, is superb. One of my favorite films of all time See more
