Critics Consensus

Thought-provoking and beautifully filmed, Before Sunrise is an intelligent, unabashedly romantic look at modern love, led by marvelously natural performances from Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy.

This is where the film’s charm lies, in the balance Linklater strikes between poetry and the everyday. Go to Full Review

It is the lightness of this film which is still charming; Jesse and Céline are free from everything, free from work worries or family cares, but they are also free from the gravity of cause-and-effect, the world of consequences and responsibilities. Go to Full Review

Draco G Apr 3, 2019 Rewatch. Dang, this is a classic. Five stars except for Hawke's goatee.
Abraham S Feb 27, 2019 Ethan and Julie hold this film down - it's an real-time kind of look at a first chance encounter and chance at love. The cliffhanger ending is great - BUT, i don't see it being anything incredibly epic in film. See more
Jan 27, 2019 The best romance movie ever made!
Albus G Jan 2, 2019 At it's core, Before Sunrise is about connecting through conversation and the possibilities it brings for both love and discovering oneself; a theme that speaks both to the beauty of a time when such simplicity was of value and warns of a time (current) where weaker substitutes inadvertently lessen the meaning of what they're meant to augment. Hagrid R Dec 2, 2018 Sweet and romantic. Even though the plot is not progressing and it is a simple movie, the conversations and chemistry between the characters make the film one of a kind and absolutely adorable. See more
Nov 29, 2018 The movie gives you that real love feeling
