Stylistically it's a beauty, with khaki-uniformed waifs fighting for their lives to a crashing classical score. Go to Full Review

Awful deaths (and hysterical reactions to them) punctuate declarations of love and friendship, revelations of treachery and heavily armed expressions of angst. Go to Full Review

Forgive the film its small flaws of histrionic performances and cheap execution for the giddy rush of its banal, Verhoevenesque atmosphere... Go to Full Review

Battle Royale” stands as a definite cult movie, from Takeshi Kitano's presence to the way it inspired Tarantino, to the violent portrayal of youth and sociopolitical criticism unfolds against a backdrop of dark humor and an evocative soundtrack. Go to Full Review

The "groundbreaking" premise of Battle Royale remains a good black comedy diversion that's more conventional than some wanted it to be. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Hagrid S Dec 30, 2018 Slightly different from the book and manga it is based on, but personally I think that most of the differences are better for it.
Kylo W Dec 3, 2018 The film that so many American franchises ripped off.
Theodore P Nov 19, 2018 Read the book (yes, this is based on an amazing book that I read in a day). Watch the movie. Read the Manga. I was incredibly impressed with how well the social commentary was translated onto film (if you didn't read the book, you'll most likely miss a lot of the nuances in the film). The book, the manga, the film have all been panned by overly sensitive types as gratuitous violence. To them I say DON'T FUCKING WATCH IT. Easy peasy. Second, get over yourselves. This is brilliant storytelling in a way that, it seems, only Japan knows how to do. And, please, people...STOP equating/comparing this to Hunger Games. It is a blatant ripoff, the only difference being that Hunger Games is made for fragile American sensitivities and profit. That and the average movie goers attention span. There are no nuances in Hunger Games. Hunger Games is to Battle Royale what Twilight is to Anne Rice. See more
Luke S Nov 6, 2018 This film was solid.
Nov 5, 2018 42 Students, Three Days, One Survivor, No Rules. Kinji Fukasakuï¿ 1/2 1/2(TM)s hit underground classic makes The Hunger Games look like a childrenï¿ 1/2 1/2(TM)s tv show. An all-out battle of life or death is made to look so stylishly gory. Japanï¿ 1/2 1/2(TM)s current economy is on the brink of collapse, the youth are becoming unruly and Kitano, a quiet teacher is forced to quit after being assaulted at his school. A class of 9th-grade students are set out on an adventure for a field trip until they are gassed and taken to a deserted island. The frightened teenagers are then met with their old teacher, Kitano, whose life they made hell. Armed with just water, food, a map and a random weapon to survive this sadistic deathmatch until thereï¿ 1/2 1/2(TM)s one winner. Failure to comply with the rules will result in the brutal death by an exploding neck collar. This movie deserves the cult status it has. The undertones of teenage drama and dark humour bring a pleasant delight to its sadistically gory theme. See more
Rey R Oct 31, 2018 Action movie junkies would be extremely remiss to pass up this classic -- yet still somehow unsung -- gem of a Japanese thrill ride. "Battle Royale" is a terrifically thought-provoking, well-paced, and (most importantly) invigorating actioner, featuring a dynamite premise, and a bevy of eye-popping set pieces. Throw in a little bit of Takeshi, and you've got yourself quite the cinematic achievement on your hands. Overall, this was a fantastic time and I hope more people see it. See more
