In a classic Disney animation, a fawn named Bambi joins his new friends, a young rabbit named Thumper and a skunk kit named Flower in happily exploring the woods. Bambi is captivated with a young doe named Faline, and he learns from his doting mother and his father -- the Great Prince of the Forest -- that besides the delights of the forest, there is danger in open meadows where hunters can see them. Though fear and tragedy touch Bambi's life, another spring brings renewal.

Disney starts to reach for a higher thesis but ultimately falls short, they will eventually find the nuance they clearly were looking for here in future films, but sadly Bambi just starts to scratch the surface of what they were ultimately looking for. Go to Full Review

Ron R Apr 19, 2019 This movie is charming. That was it's main goal, and to that end it succeeded really well (excluding the death of Bambi's mom)
Mar 28, 2019 Bambi is disneyâ(TM)s most adult movie, disguised as a kidâ(TM)s flick. It has cutesy scenes, bright colors and a whimsical childlike feel, and yet it says more in one hour that most Disney movies do in 2. It plays so well to the theme of growing up as well as being so deliberately different from other Disney movies, that you havenâ(TM)t seen much like it since. One of the reasons why Bambi is so appealing to watch today is because of the amazing presentation of animals living in the wild. I feel like a lot of animated movies depicting wild animals often humanize them to the point where you canâ(TM)t even recognize them as animals anymore, whereas in Bambi, all animals feel natural in their environment, no pun intended. They all move and talk exactly like the animals would in real life, and the beautiful animation really makes you believe like youâ(TM)re watching animals talk to each other, rather than watching a film about animals talking to each other. Of course there are a few exceptions where they act slightly human, but these moments are very brief and not played up as much, so it isnâ(TM)t too distracting, and often when these moments do occur, it actually serves a purpose, mainly to aid the humor of the scene. The animation also not only provides fantastic movement for the characters, but it also perfects the atmosphere along with the soundtrack, in fact, most of the story is told visually without dialogue, fully allowing the animation and the music to take center stage. Little subtle things that develop our characters, such as the mother taking the bark from the high tree that bambi canâ(TM)t reach, bambi and his mother running through the meadow, this all adds to the emotion which the film is driven upon. The two no talking scenes that really stand out to me are the thunderstorm scene and when bambi meets his father for the first time. In the thunderstorms scene, the musics starts out small when the rain starts to pour a little, then booms extremely loudly when the thunder hits. The thunder is played up to the point where itâ(TM)s almost as if the thunder is the real danger in the movie. Bambi is terrified of it, whereas all the other animals just kinda ignore it. The second scene where bambi is in the meadow, the great deer who is respected by the other deer walks past the herd and stops when he reaches bambi, when bambi meets him, he is extremely intimidated and almost frightened by him. The deer looks at bambi for a short time, and bambi becomes even more nervous, until the deer walks away, and Bambi looks at him in awe. The movie is very adult oriented, in the sense that it isnâ(TM)t aimed particularly at kids, but rather at parents who have children of their own. Another great aspect about this movie is the stark contrast between Bambiâ(TM)s childhood and his adult life. As a child, Bambi lives an innocent life full of fun around every corner and always having his mother to protect him, whereas his adult life is much darker and more somber. In one scene, heâ(TM)s discovering snow for the first time, and in the other heâ(TM)s getting shot in the air. His adult life has more negative aspects than his childhood but with added benefits, just like real adulthood, bambi may have had his mother shot and has to deal with forest fires, other deer competitors and hunters, but on the other hand, he now discovered what love is, he is strong enough to protect himself and he is less scared than he was as a reckless child. There isnâ(TM)t really a traditional villain. Many would say, oh, the deer which tries to compete for the mate is the villain, but at the end of the day, that deer is only doing what any deer would do, we just happen to be rooting for the other side. The real villain in this movie is man. You never see him, you donâ(TM)t even hear them talk or see their shadows. The only indication that man is near is by the gunshots, the smoke and the indication from other animals. You always feel their presence when that music starts to intensify and the animals take notice. It perfectly illustrates manâ(TM)s intentional harm of nature, as well as their unintentional harm of nature. Towards the second act of the movie, things start to really get dark, you have animals getting killed, being chased and attacked by dogs and Bambi getting maimed. Bambi lays injured on the ground when his father finally comes to the rescue, and the scene where Bambi is learning to walk is sort of reimagined in a much darker way. In the final scene of the movie, the very first scene is replayed; two deer are born in the exact same place with almost the same audience attending the birth. But this time, the newborns are Bambiâ(TM)s children. it cuts to the mountain where the first scene ended, with Bambi and his father standing over the cliff, his father walking away, as if signaling that Bambi has taken over his role as great prince of the forest. The circle of life is now fully complete, and will repeat itself forever. See more
Hagrid G Mar 27, 2019 One of my favorite in Disney's library, the cute moments never outlive their welcome due to the harsh and dark moments that follow. Bambi manages to tell much of its story visually through the stunning animation, which as I get older I truly appreciate. See more
Han Feb 9, 2019 One word: nature. A film that practically makes me want to go outside more often during the summer, it's one of the most simple stories ever put to a Disney film. Not at all a bad thing, in fact, it reminds me of Dumbo where you're more simply experience a moment with these characters. A moment of all different emotions, and emotions play a strong part in Bambi. With this, the emotions are not only through the music, but it is possibly stronger with the characters and their emotions. I always loved Disney films that is not at all hesitant to be a little dark, kind of like Pinocchio. The best thing in Bambi is not just the animation, but the very structure of the animation. Of all the Disney films, this is the one to have the most realistic animal drawings. With how much pressure it took to draw the deers as realistic as possible, it executed itself exceptionally well. While the other animals are not drawn as realistically, I do admire the fact that they did have physical traits in connection to the real animal. With how they walk and move, such as how Thumper would bang his foot on the ground, they seem so real to the point where I can imagine myself interacting with them like real animals. You know a film is a coming of age story when it begins with the birth of the main character and ends with the birth of that character's child. Yet, the film does a very good job at establishing a strong connection between Bambi and the mother. I also really admire that one rare occasion where the villain is never seen on screen. It's all about how the animals react to him that really helps you feel intimidated by him, even if he's human like we are. This leads to the most famous scene of the film where Bambi's mother dies. While it is a very well done scene, I do feel it could have been a bit stronger. There could've been more of a climatic time of the two running from Man, and maybe Bambi's reactions could have been stronger as well. Maybe when Bambi was crying he could have sounded like he was truly crying and have expressions showing more of that emotion. Maybe the lines written for him right after his mother died could have had more of a pull to it. Instead of "The Man, mother! Wait...mother!" there could have been "Was that...Man...mother?" Something to where it really starts to grab you. I'll be very honest in that the sing never made me cry, I was just more into the way the characters' reacted to the situation. The scene following it is a bunch of birdies singing a light-hearted song, and I really wish they took more time to that moment of Bambi reuniting with his father. While the film can be a little too cutesy at times and may linger the plot, the film is still really strong. While the ice skating scene is pointless, it stills is very entertaining to watch. I both really admire and really disapprove the scene of Bambi and Faline fighting and escaping the dogs. On the one hand, I don't feel like that scene served a strong enough purpose. Yet, I do admire watching the animation and expressions on the dogs. Some of the nature shots of the film are unbelievable to watch. How they used the multiplane camera to make it feel more realistic in nature is just a wonderful treat. This being used in scenes like in the very beginning of the film and in the April Showers song is just a wonderful technique to watch in effect. The songs and music of the film are at the emotional peak of the Disney films, almost in competition with Snow White in all honesty. Bambi is an unforgettably well-animated, well-produced animated film with great emotion and scenery. 3.5/4 See more
