What to Know

Critics Consensus

Befitting its unorthodox origins, this Bad Lieutenant benefits from Werner Herzog's typically fearless direction and a delightfully unhinged Nicolas Cage in the title role.

Bad Lieutenant invites us along for the ride, and even says 'welcome aboard' and asks: how might we entertain you today? This is Herzog and it's fun, and you don't get many of those for the pound. Get it while you can. Go to Full Review

Gritty, raw, and kooky at times, Bad Lieutenant is one of those movies that you can't really look away, even though you may want to for certain scenes. Go to Full Review

Dec 26, 2018 Cage is brilliant as a drug addicted cop. Val Kilmer is acting very convincing and realistic as an emotionless routine cop. this movie got a few very funny and bizarre scenes! See more
Han L Dec 16, 2018 Scary in a way only Werner Herzog and Nicholas Cage can pull off; depraved and self-destructive.
Rey S Sep 21, 2018 It's probably not fair to review an 11 year old movie. But this one is standard cop vs drug dealers. Nicolas Cage plays a corrupt cop, but nothing you wouldn't see on CSI. The violence was neither very violent or interesting. Filming in New Orleans Was a great idea but underutilized. Same with Eva Mendes as the junkie girlfriend. There's one interesting scene involving lizards [! ] that seems to have no point except, hey, lizards! It's sort of a crazy movie. But not crazy enough. See more
Kylo R Jun 15, 2018 This movie is a pretty good Friday Nite Flick if you're lookin for something decent to watch... A little over the top with some of Lieutenant Terence McDonagh's (Nicholas Cage) antics, but I think that adds to the characters persona & definitely makes the story more interesting & entertaining overall. So sit back, relax & get ready to be entertained by this Packed cast including: Nicolas Cage, Val Kilmer, Eva Mendes, Fairuza Balk, Exhibit & Jennifer Coolidge. Also making appearances is, Shea Whigham & Michael Shannon as well. You won't be disappointed... See more
Poe S Sep 21, 2017 Wow, on a batch of 5 films rented, this was the one I was expecting to be bad and it was the best. Realistically made all along, I was gripped by the story and the slide toward hell. This film has a religious spirit though and the slide turns into an arc that bounces a couple of times. Pretty good acting that kept us mostly believing and the events that get so outrageous it cavorts with comedy, makes for a surprisingly enjoyable spooky ride. Kudos to Herzog. Very good work, bordering on excellent. See more
