Critics Consensus

Avengers: Infinity War ably juggles a dizzying array of MCU heroes in the fight against their gravest threat yet, and the result is a thrilling, emotionally resonant blockbuster that (mostly) realizes its gargantuan ambitions.

With so many characters to cover, directors Anthony and Joe Russo have no time to develop any of them, and the action set pieces are all by the numbers.

Infinity War didn't wear me down in the way that Age of Ultron did, it didn't give me the high of the first Avengers either. Like I said, manage expectations and you'll be just fine.

The film's risk comes from the inherent need to 'balance' a myriad of characters' storylines, yet the story itself is nothing more than those same MCU building blocks.

If some pacing issues and the occasional bloat prevent it from quite reaching the upper echelons of the MCU, there's still more than enough here to keep viewers sated, saturated, and salivating over what's certain to be a poignant and potent Part Deux.

The film does a fantastic job of recreating scenes from the comic book pages, primarily Infinity Gauntlet (1991) and Infinity (2013). Infinity War‘s cinematography is splendid, but it would not be the same without the characters’ togetherness.

The climax of ten years of revolutionary filmmaking, 'Infinity War' is the best possible movie it can be. A product of its own ambition, the only real fault of the film is the sheer number of characters, arcs, and many other things going on at once that make it difficult to fully appreciate how detailed and payed off McFeely and Markus' writing, as well as the Russo brothers' directing, really are. Though a big enough chunk of its enormous cast of thirty plus characters don't get their due, many favorites like Captain America and Black Panther included, a bigger percentage do, often even improving upon their solo movies. Doctor Strange, Iron Man (RDJ acts circles around everyone), Vision and Wanda's love story, and particularly Thor excel against the film's appropriately dark, somber tone. But it's the brilliant use of Thanos (a tip-top Josh Brolin) as the film's protagonist, along with rejuvenated motivations for the Mad Titan's spiritual quest for balance, that really seal the deal.

This is a superb film with the best action the series has seen. I found myself almost leaping out of my seat at certain points, especially that Thor moment with the main theme. I feel that all the characters in this film were utilised to the best of their ability which made for an exciting and satisfying viewing, not to mention emotional. The only drawback to this film, for me, was that your enjoyment of it will be highly dependant on how many of the main marvel films you have seen previously. You may not be as moved as you thought you were going to be if you go into this thinking it will just be an epic action movie, its heavily dependant on the ongoing plot of the franchise. 4.5/5.
