What to Know

Critics Consensus

Atomic Blonde gets enough mileage out of its stylish action sequences -- and ever-magnetic star -- to make up for a narrative that's somewhat less hard-hitting than its protagonist.

The fight on the staircase, a single take that lasts several minutes, is a particular highlight. It draws humour from the violence, too, and James McAvoy is having a ball as an unhinged operative. Go to Full Review

Anakin S Apr 28, 2019 Liked it.. It actually only could have ended in either of two ways, but you couldn't be sure until the end.. worth seeing, maybe not as suspense a second time but.. See more
Apr 18, 2019 If you just want to watch a kick-ass action film, Atomic Blonde isn't a bad pick. Just don't watch it for the story because it's terribly convoluted. It may seem like a female version of John Wick at first (as it is from the same director), but Atomic Blonde is actually more like Salt with the choreography and visual style of John Wick. It does stand on its own, although comparing it to John Wick would make sense. The action scenes were thrilling to watch. The fight scene at the apartment and the long staircase fight scene in particular were the best scenes. The staircase fight gave the illusion that it was done in one take, but the cuts were pretty obvious. It was fun to see Charlize Theron kick ass, but it wasn't completely unbelievable, as she does get beaten and bruised pretty badly a couple of times, and still manages to ooze sexiness. The plot, however, tries too hard to be clever, with multiple twists and constant misdirection that the plot became muddled and confusing, and character motivations were difficult to follow. The movie is also devoid of pacing as the movie often cuts back to Charlize Theron in an interrogation room with John Goodman and Toby Jones. The movie touches on the Cold War and the demolition of the Berlin Wall, but does so very superficially. Atomic Blonde is a technically brilliant film, with stylish visuals, well-choreographed action scenes, and a kick-ass '80s soundtrack. If you can overlook the narrative shortcomings, there's a lot to like about the film. I, however, could not engage with the story or the characters, and was left bored when Charlize Theron wasn't beating people up. See more
Rey S Apr 14, 2019 You've already seen this film. Or at least, you have if you've seen a Jason Bourne movie. Or John Wick, The Equalizer, Taken, The Accountant, The Punisher, etc, etc, etc, etc. And Hollywood writers are going to keep finding new ways to tell a story about the killer spy who is wronged and kills a thousand henchmen before getting the biggest bad guy. I can just see someone pitching this film: "Ok, it's 1988 and a super-trained MI6 agent is in Berlin when the wall is about to fall, and get this, this agent is....FEMALE! A female Jason Bourne! And since it's set in the 80's we can have a killer 80's soundtrack!" And like John Wick, the movie if full of endless, over-choreographed fight scenes. You can almost hear the actors counting off the movements as the "fight" is going on. (One, two, three, left-click, two, two three, left uppercut followed by two shots to the chest and one to the head.) And it's hard not to notice how outer-limits it is, as far as realism goes. I mean, there are scenes where Theron's character had a gun point at a villain's head, but had it kicked out of her hand before she could pull the trigger. Because in this film, flying leg kicks are quicker than a trigger finger. Also, Theron has large men throw her into walls, connect with punches to her head over and over again in THE SAME FIGHT, and she keeps getting up. It's amazing. (Meanwhile, here on Earth, any ONE of those punches would knock her out.) Atomic Blonde has a much better plot than the typical "Good hearted trained killer seeks revenge for blah blah blah" story, has a good soundtrack and is well made, but I got tired of the endless, predictable fight scenes.
