A lonely widower lies about his age to enter a lottery for a once-in-a-lifetime chance to travel on the first commercial flight to outer space. When his name gets drawn, he soon finds himself preparing for the ultimate adventure of his dreams.

Critics Consensus

Astronaut can't quite escape the gravitational pull of its story's sentimental overtones, but Richard Dreyfuss keeps the film in a pleasantly diverting orbit.

For a film about the joy and value of expanding your horizons, whatever your age, its outlook is irksomely blinkered.

Richard Dreyfuss certainly proves that at the age of 72, he still has “The Right Stuff” with an out of this world performance that will move you to tears. A heart-warming tale of never given up on your dreams.

Makes some obvious choices that prevent it from fully taking flight - a dance sequence at the nursing home is particularly awful - but has enough to say about aging and following your dreams to earn it a look for family audiences.
