What to Know

Critics Consensus

Apocalypto is a brilliantly filmed, if mercilessly bloody, examination of a once great civilization.

Apocalypto demonstrates two things: that Mel Gibson is a hell of a filmmaker and that his imaginative world borders on the Neanderthal. Go to Full Review

It's escapism - the world would be a lot safer if good and evil were so clearly defined - and it's something that Mel Gibson proves (once again) that he does very, very well in Apocalypto. Go to Full Review

It's Gibson's taste for carnage that defeats him in the end. The brutality is relentless, and the many ways in which blood is spilt so ingenious, that it's numbing. Once the adrenaline rush subsides, there's nothing left. Go to Full Review

Gibson makes people nervous in part because he takes the obscene fascination with violence ... to such absurd heights that the entire phenomenon threatens to become visible and called into question. Go to Full Review

Apr 18, 2019 This movie is absolutely incredible; one of my allt-time favorites. It would be a 95% if Mel didn't make those comments for which he is now infamous See more
Poe P Apr 18, 2019 A strange film, from the opening minutes I thought a bit strange. Which for my film watching history is a bit of a misnomer. The film follows a Mayan kingdom tribe in the jungle before Spanish colonisation in the 16th century. Filmed in the Mayan language of Myn without subtitles I wondered what I had got into. However relentless action sequences filmed amidst breathtaking location scenery soon changed my attitude towards the film. It mixes elements of films like Planet Of The Apes, Cannibal Holocaust, Predator, television shows like I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! and those survival shows hosted by ex-special forces types. The fate of a tribe being captured and taken to an ancient city and a chase story of one of the tribesman evading death defying scenes to try and rescue his pregnant lover and young son. Featuring some (quite literally) stomach churning moments it descends into some extreme scenes. You don't really need to understand the language to work out what is going on. Then there is the director, writer, producer. A certain Mel Gibson. Never far from controversy throughout his film career and personal life. One cannot doubt his controversial directorial abilities. That reminds me of another film link related to Mel Gibson's acting career. Mad Max. The prosthetics, make up and costume reminded me of the Mad Max films. See more
Kylo S Feb 18, 2019 Brilliant directing by Mel Gibson and the acting and action was suburb. Though many reviews state that the setting Mayan the architecture of the temples were more Aztecan but that is quibbling. Gibson's mythic action-adventure placed the movie in an end time (at least for these indigenous people) that captures the brutality of humankind. Not for children... seriously a R movie. See more
Ron G Jan 21, 2019 Mel Gibson's direction moves this film into a different class than its plot line deserves.
Draco W Jan 9, 2019 This film proves that the crazy guy Mel Gibson is a genius of sorts. With Apocalypto, Mel Gibson has proven it's possible to create a compelling action/adventure film in almost any setting. Gibson's theme is that all great civilizations fail when they begin to rot from the inside. Over the next 2 1/4 hours, he provides glimpses into the degeneracy of the Mayan society on the eve of its encounter with the Spanish conquistadores. However, Apocalypto is not a political tract or a dissertation about why the Mayan age came to an end. Instead, it's a high-octane adventure that concludes with one of the most intense extended chase sequences in recent movie history. See more
Harry W Dec 31, 2018 A great feat of imagination and a return to true epic filmmaking since you start the story in almost total confusion, are immersed in a world that is strange and also total with no idea until about two-thirds of the way through what is going to happen next, until you see every revenge story trope punching through - an absolutely convincing window into what a primitive world really felt like.
