In Vietnam in 1970, Captain Willard (Martin Sheen) takes a perilous and increasingly hallucinatory journey upriver to find and terminate Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Brando), a once-promising officer who has reportedly gone completely mad. In the company of a Navy patrol boat filled with street-smart kids, a surfing-obsessed Air Cavalry officer (Robert Duvall), and a crazed freelance photographer (Dennis Hopper), Willard travels further and further into the heart of darkness.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

A voyage to hell where the journey is more satisfying than the destination, Francis Ford Coppola's haunting, hallucinatory Vietnam War epic is cinema at its most audacious and visionary.

Years and years from now, when Coppola’s budget and his problems have long been forgotten, “Apocalypse” will still stand, I think, as a grand and grave and insanely inspired gesture of filmmaking. Go to Full Review

It's precisely in the last 25 minutes that Apocalypse Now dissolves into gibberish. I've seen the film three times with two different endings, and neither ending has been satisfactory. That's because the problem with the picture isn't at its very end. Go to Full Review

Some critics fault Coppola for not delivering a seamless, flawless film. But this is to misperceive and misread the film in a crucial way. The film by definition couldn't be flawless. It attempts too much. Go to Full Review

The deeper it goes, the shallower it becomes. The realistic becomes the theatrical. The emotions of the viewer rebel and the remaining traumatic focus is shattered. For all its flaws, Apocalypse Now remains an amazing triumph. Go to Full Review

…Apocalypse Now is perhaps one of the ten must-see films ever made, huge in scope, precise as a watch, staggering in intent….a vision of a man-made hell on earth that only the slaying of a man-god could justify… Go to Full Review

A projection of madness, Apocalypse Now is perhaps the most important text in Coppola's filmography and remains an incredibly worthy and relevant journey through the jungle, which looks at the nature of both power and chaos. Go to Full Review

Rey R Apr 24, 2019 For a major classic, this isn't actually my favorite. Don't get me wrong, it's very good but it has got some flaws. Although Marlin Brando is greatly remembered for this film, it's Martin Sheen who really takes the show. The flick is also very good at showing use the abominable horrors of the Vietnam war, and it's true that the cinematography is amazing, for the time, no wonder it won an Oscar for it. But unfortunately, it's over 3h long, which can be hard to sit through, and some moments are just too long and unnecessary. Overall, if you've got the courage to sit through this version, you may like it! See more
Rey L Apr 3, 2019 Adaptation of Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. Not as good as the book, but it doesnâ(TM)t try to be. Uses the Vietnam war as a replacement for Belgium occupied Congo to convey ultimately, The story of how experiences can change a man, and one is molded by the terrible things they see. See more
Poe R Apr 2, 2019 BY FAR, the most overrated move EVER made in my opinion. The first half of the movie is good, very good, in fact. The second half is a snoozefest. For the life of me, I do not get the appeal of this movie. It doesn't come close to Coppola's early 70's tirfecta of The Godfather, The Conversation and The Godfather Part II. Total letdown with this one. The only movie that comes close on the overrated scale is the French film 'Breathless', which is total garbage. See more
Hermione L Mar 21, 2019 Apocalypse Now is a very creative spectacle showcasing a different perspective on Vietnam though the experience can seem over-stylized and over inflated. See more
Draco W Mar 3, 2019 What a phenomenal movie. Even though it was made 40 years ago (!!!) it's not at all dated. The restored version feels new, as if it was made this year. The set pieces and cinematography in the Philippines are perfect. The acting is great, most notably from Sheen, Duvall and the side characters (ie Fishburne). You get a clear sense of Sheen's descent into madness as he chases the mad Brando. The action scenes were remarkable considering they're 40 years old. From the aerial shots of the helicopters in formation, to the explosions, to the use of fire and flares... it's all so captivating and feels so genuine/real. The plot was have been simple (a man's quest up river from South Vietnam to Cambodia in order to hunt down a rogue Captain) but it's also so much more than that. Francis Ford Coppola stated that he wanted it akin to a man's journey inward; to his true self, and how that requires you to go slightly mad in order to achieve the objective. The single only reason it didn't get 5* is because I found the ending to be just "good" and anti-climatic. FFC admits he didn't know how to end the saga and was disappointed in the final result. The climax imo ended up being the journey up the coast and the battles they ran into. I highly recommend this movie to everyone, especially those who are so quick to be willing to send our children into wars. See more
Rey M Mar 2, 2019 I've lost count of how many times I've seen this film, but always come back to it to lose myself for an afternoon in this wonder of a war movie. The only thing that kept it from being perfect was Marlon Brando's fat, lazy, ass, which FFC did his best to work-around, so it's still tops. See more
