In this adaptation of the Mona Simpson novel, single mother Adele August (Susan Sarandon) is bad with money, and even worse when it comes to making decisions. Her straight-laced daughter, Ann (Natalie Portman), is a successful high school student with Ivy League aspirations. When Adele decides to pack up and move the two of them from the Midwest to Beverly Hills, Calif., to pursue her dreams of Hollywood success, Ann grows frustrated with her mother's irresponsible and impulsive ways.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

The strong chemistry between Susan Sarandon and Natalie Portman as a mother and daughter trying to make a fresh start in L.A. helps to elevate Anywhere But Here above its occasional forays into melodrama.

As a depiction of a loving-turbulent relationship between a single mom (Susan Sarandon) and her rebellious teenage daughter (Natalie Portman), Wang's meller is nicely crafted but old-fashioned like Hollywood's weepies of yesteryear. Go to Full Review

By the end of Anywhere But Here, everything has worked out perfectly (and predictably), but that perfection seems implausible and almost disappointing. Go to Full Review

Jun 6, 2018 I LOVE this movie. It is a movie about a mother with a personality disorder narcissism and how her daughter Ann makes the best of it.I really liked the movie because it reflected things I deal with my own mom.Hallmark narcissistic stuff my mom constantly does lying,no boundaries.charming and being irritating beyond belief. One of the best parts in the movie was when the police officer believed Ann when she talked about how difficult her mom was and he gave Ann good advise.I also liked how the daughter although she wasn't happy with a lot of things her mom did to control her life she had funny little ways to rebel against her mom without really hurting her self. Mar 23, 2018 Watched it last night. Was mesmerized. Totally loved it. Can watch again and again. A mother's love...
Luke S Feb 22, 2018 This movie reminded me of my life in a lot of ways. Plenty is different, but oddly I felt I knew these two people very well. I was about the same age as Portman's character, back then, so everything felt familiar, in good and bad ways. I'd say the same about Sarandon's character exhibiting similar traits as my real mom as well... Great little flick to chill out to. I recommend ;) -ae See more
