Critics Consensus

Annihilation backs up its sci-fi visual wonders and visceral genre thrills with an impressively ambitious -- and surprisingly strange -- exploration of challenging themes that should leave audiences pondering long after the end credits roll.

It's an exploration of the weight of our own mistakes. How the choices we make, and the things we can't change, fundamentally change us.

Annihilation is a visceral sensory experience that chills the blood and makes the skin crawl (literally), leading to a bravura conclusion that would make Tarkovsky proud and any jaw drop.

Absorbing and hypnotic, Annihilation is the best kind of sci-fi film - the kind that challenges and subverts the genre, all the while introducing new ideas that you'll see in films to come.

The brilliance of Annihilation is that it encourages conversation, it makes your brain itch whether you’re on your first, second, or third viewing.

Masterfully mind-bending, Annihilation will draw you back in again and again, even when you might not understand exactly what happened.

Great sci-fi is very rewatchable, and Annihilation qualifies; it may not be quite as strong as Ex Machina, but who cares?

I don't even know what to say when I saw this divisive, mind-bender of a movie. Alex Garland did a terrific job creating a unique premise with a nice screenplay. And plenty of impressive sci-fi elements to match its breathtaking visual effects. However, his perception is so challenging, casual viewers will never get fully invested. They have to battle that on top of weak undeveloped characters, bafflingly odd storytelling, and a conclusion that will leave everyone clueless. Overall its not bad and will definitely make you think. But I guarantee you won't love it.

THE OVERABUNDANCE OF THEMES FEELS OVERWHELMING AND NATALIE PORTMAN'S LACKLUSTER PERFORMANCE DOES NOT HELP TO TONE IT DOWN

Garland's Annihilation is a simple story about creation and destruction. Good acting, good actors and direction, Annihilation's crown jewels are its breathtaking pacing, special effects and monsters design; the world beyond the Shimmer presents beautifly terrifying scenery and creatures that are sure to haunt the audience. Also, props for not being a jumpscare-based horror movie. Toast to that.

My sister raved on about this movie but I thought it was a bit slow and the story line was hard to understand. The special effects and scenery were great.

solid acting makes it quite compelling, very good visuals drag you in. a refreshing female overweight may be something actually important. it has some flaws though and can't decide if its drama, adventure, horror, psychological, ... one could say great substantial movie above the average, one could say it is a light and wannabe tarkovskyian movie.
