This animated trek across the musical landscape of the 20th century begins with young immigrant Zalmie arriving in New York City. He's addicted to show business, but an accident ruins his voice. He marries a stripper and their son, Benny, becomes a jazz pianist. Although Benny is killed in World War II, his son, Tony, goes on to great success as a songwriter during the '60s, as does Tony's son, Pete (also Thompson), in the '80s.

Although the plot, like the music itself, can be somewhat too strident, the animation is remarkably successful in delineating the sad geography of the human body and the massive backgrounds of American cities. Go to Full Review

This is a film that grandly overreaches, attempting to condense a century's worth of triumph and tragedy into ninety minutes. To a surprising degree it succeeds. Go to Full Review

George S Apr 18, 2019 American Pop is a highly ambitious, but very flawed effort from Ralph Bakshi. It's a movie that spans almost a century in its story and thus its 96-minute runtime was a terrible decision that backfired and the movie felt incredibly rushed. I did like some of the conversations here and how serious and dramatic the movie is, but the characters are underdeveloped and the score can be overly loud. It's an interesting departure for the director that did not really work. See more
Jan 26, 2019 The best animated movie ever made!
Rey S Dec 10, 2018 Love the artwork, love the ride through the multiple generations of the times, and music. Great choices of music too!
Finn W Mar 14, 2018 American Pop is magical. It's old, gnarly, and weird, but fresh and alive at the same time. It swings for the fences and sometimes misses, but never loses the characters and you can forgive those moments as they are sandwiched between greatness. See more
Aug 26, 2017 Best animated full feature of its time.
Harry S Jun 25, 2017 Despite its critics, American Pop is an important movie about the first three-fourths of the Twentieth Century. When I saw this mioptic film on the big screen I was enthralled by its historical and musical references. Having seen American Pop again today on television, and in consideration of advances in animation technology during these past thirty years, I believe this film stands up very well indeed! However, its cut scenes to historical news reels are long overdue for a reboot. It's original animation is beautiful and brilliant. The animation must remain untouched. Perhaps the original animation ought to be completely retained, but Modern Animation-styled News Reel footage be revised, added were an American Pop : Director's Cut be released. be released See more
